Maxine Mitchel

Maxine Mitchel, 90, of Roanoke, IN, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at 11:10 a.m. at Norwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Mitchel, a 1936 graduate of Decatur High School, was a homemaker. She had worked as a legal secretary for McClanahan in Decatur. She was associated with Union Church in Huntington County.

She was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Decatur to Frank and Ruth Zerkel Drake. She married Lester Mitchel on Jan. 1, 1939, in Decatur. Her husband survives.

Wilma D. Hacker

Wilma Deane Hacker, 82, of Huntington, IN, and formerly of Andrews, IN, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at 12:35 a.m. at the Norwood Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Hacker was a homemaker and a member of Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church. She was active in the Democrat Party and was a member of the Dallas Township Extension Homemakers Club and the Rebekah Lodge. She graduated from Andrews High School in 1945 and later from beauty college.

Darleen J. McDaniel

Darleen J. McDaniel, 80, of Huntington, IN, and formerly of Rockford, OH, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at 5:59 p.m. at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Oct. 8, 1948, in Fort Wayne to Oris D. and Jeanette E. Thompson DeWald. She married Bruce McDaniel on Jan. 1, 1999. Her husband survives.

Marjorie A. Osterholt

Marjorie A. Osterholt, 88, of Fort Wayne, IN, and having family members in Roanoke, IN, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at St. Anne Home and Retirement Community, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Osterholt was a homemaker. She was a charter member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Fort Wayne, and graduated from St. Catherine's Academy.

She was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Fort Wayne. She married Tony Osterholt, who preceded her in death in 1996.

Geneva M. Getz

Geneva Mae Getz, 92, a former resident of rural Wabash, IN, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at Rolling Meadows Healthcare Center, LaFontaine.

Mrs. Getz had been employed as the head cook at Southwood High School for 11 years. She was a member of Parr Memorial Church, Kokomo.

She was born May 2, 1916, in Alexandria to John Lee and Cora Alderson Anderson. She married James Donald "Don" Getz on April 7, 1934, in Kokomo. Her husband preceded her in death on March 1, 2002.

HNHS girls' and boys' bowling teams advance to regional

Both the third-ranked Huntington North High School girls' bowling team and the seventh- ranked HNHS boys' bowling ream will be participating in regional play Saturday, Feb. 7.

The Lady Vikings punched their ticket to regional by winning the Hoosier Conference Sectional on Saturday, Jan. 31, in Portland.

The win was decided in the 10th and final frame, where the team narrowly beat Bellmont by 10 pins.

HU men let Indiana Wesleyan get away in second half for loss

The Huntington University men’s basketball team let a tight game at halftime get away from them in the second half and took an 82-63 loss at the hands of visiting Indiana Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

The Foresters, 15-10, trailed the 20-5 visitors by just two points at halftime, 33-31, but couldn’t keep up their end of the bargain in the second half. IWU turned a 44-40 lead into a 58-47 advantage in a five-minute stretch in the second frame and never looked back.

Parent who filed suit to stop religious program in schools has her way ... for now

It appears as though the parent of a local third-grader who filed suit to stop the practice of offering a religious education program on school grounds will have her way ... at least for now.

United States Magistrate Judge Roger B. Cosbey on Tuesday issued his report and recommendation on the pending legal case filed by the mother of an 8-year-old Horace Mann student on Nov. 12.

Phyllis E. Barton

Phyllis E. Barton, 82, of Zanesville, IN, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at 8:17 a.m. at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Barton was a member of Union Church. She had worked at Triad-Utrad, later known as MagneTek, for 26 years, retiring in March 1992. She was a 1944 graduate of Clear Creek High School.

She was born Dec. 22, 1926, in Huntington County to Milo and Agnes Murray Anderson. She married Paul E. Barton on June 11, 1944, in Lancaster. Her husband preceded her in death on May 11, 1987.

Margaret E. Steller

Margaret Elizabeth Steller, 85, of Huntington, IN, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at noon at her son's home in Pittsboro.

Mrs. Steller had been employed as a secretary at Maco in Huntington until retiring in 1986. She was a member of St. Peter's First United Church of Christ, Huntington. She graduated from Huntington Township High School in 1941 and attended Indiana Business College.

She was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Huntington to Edward and Margaret Limbacher Corell. She married Eugene Steller on May 3, 1952. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1981.
