Sherman's five hits, 9 RBI lead Vikings to doubleheader crushing of Northrop

Junior Trent Sherman collected five hits and nine runs batted in to lead the Huntington North High School baseball team past host Northrop in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, April 17.

Sherman went 3 for 3 with four ribbies in a 14-2 victory in the first game of the twinbill, then came back with a 2 for 2, five RBI effort in a 23-12 beatdown of the hosts in the second game.

HU baseball team splits with Spring Arbor

The Huntington University baseball team came within one inning of a doubleheader sweep of visiting Spring Arbor on Saturday, April 17.

The Foresters scored four runs in the sixth inning of the first game to beat Spring Arbor, 6-5, then held a 3-0 lead in the second game until the visitors scored four runs in the seventh to hand HU a 4-3 loss.

The Foresters, 15-17 overall on the season, saw Spring Arbor jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of the first game. The Cougars held a 5-2 advantage in the sixth before HU pushed across the winning runs.

Lady Vikings' JV softball team beats up on Muncie Central in doubleheader sweep

The Huntington North High School junior varsity softball team got five-hit pitching on the day and smacked out 26 hits of its own to crush host Muncie Central in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17.

Audrey Hiner pitched a two-hitter and HNHS pounded out 12 hits in a 27-0 win in the first game. Brianna McClellan then pitched a three-hitter and the Lady Vikings rang up 14 more hits in a 24-2 second game win.

Tackett leads HNHS golfers to Northrop Invitational crown

Junior EJ Tackett fired a medalist 77 to lead the Huntington North High School boys' golf team to victory at the Northrop Invitational on Saturday, April 17.

Two Viking teammates also got into the top 10 individually as HNHS posted a 333 team score to win by 10 strokes over Wawasee.

Senior Garrett Bracht fired an 83 for third place individually and sophomore Jordan Sweet had an 86 for ninth place to back up Tackett. Junior Quinton Flora completed the scoring with an 87, and non-scorer Tyler Shearer was just behind with an 89.

HU softball team drops opener in seventh, loses nitecap big to Bethel

The Huntington University softball team lost in the seventh inning of the first game and wound up dropping both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Bethel on Thursday, April 15.

The Foresters took a 3-2 loss in the opener, and then fell 11-5 in the second game as they dropped to 12-14 overall on the season, 6-4 in the Mid-Central Conference.

Aubrey Garner's RBI single in the third and her sacrifice fly in the fifth had HU up 2-1 in the opener, but Bethel used two singles and a double in the seventh to take the win.

Donald F. March

Donald Frank March, 75, of Huntington, IN, died Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. at his home.

Mr. March was a Navy corpsman from 1951to 1955. He was a 1956 graduate of Elmhurst High School in Fort Wayne.

He was born Aug. 19, 1934, in Fort Wayne to Frank L. and June Davis March. He was married Feb. 1, 1957, to Carol W. Baker, and she survives.

Kristiana M. Roe

Kristiana Marie Roe, 39, of Huntington, IN, died Friday, April 16, 2010, at 6 a.m. at her home.

Mrs. Roe was a homemaker.

She was born July 22, 1970, in Decatur to Alan D. and Wilma Ruth Mays Richey. Her father survives in Huntington.

HU men's tennis team gets shut out by IIT

The Huntington University men's tennis team got shut out by host Indiana Institute of Technology 0-9 pm Wednesday, April 14.

In singles, Gonzalo Vivas fell5-7, 6-7 at No. 1; Martin Vivas lost 1-6, 0-6 at No. 2; Jameel Brenneman lost2-6, 2-6 at No. 3; Jon Brenneman was defeated 1-6, 6-7 at No. 4; Matt Cable lost1-6, 1-6 at No. 5; and Paul Hageman lost4-6, 0-6 at No. 6.

In doubles, the Vivas brothers lost 5-8 at No. 1; the Brenneman brothers lost 1-8 at No. 2; and Cable and Keaton McDonald fell 1-8 at No. 3.

HU women drop spring tennis opener

The Huntington University women's tennis team lost its spring season opener 1-6 to host Indiana Institute of Technology on Wednesday, April 14.

Raelyn Althoff had the lone win for the Foresters, defeating her opponent 7-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.

Haley Niederhiser was edged 0-6, 6-1, 6-7 at No. 1 singles; Kelsey Mark was defeated at No. 3; and Erica Abel was beaten in the first set at No. 5.

In doubles, Niederhiser and Althoff lost 4-8 at No. 1; Kristen Lahman and Mark lost 3-8 at No. 2; and Abel and Lauren Sunderman fell short 8-9 at No. 3.
