Cuttriss inducted into Purdue honors group

Melissa Nicole Cuttriss, of Huntington, was inducted into membership in the Purdue University chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars on Sunday, Sept. 16.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is the nation's only interdisciplinary honors organization for first and second-year college students.

Membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing.

 

Bolens to open home for Tri Kappa Housewalk

A custom designed corner hutch and dining table have a prominent role in the kitchen of the home of Bob and Abbey Bolen, one of five sites included in the Tri Kappa Housewalk on Oct. 14.

Bob and Abbey Bolen will open their rural Huntington home to visitors on Sunday, Oct. 14, during the Tri Kappa Housewalk.

Sitting on five and a half acres, the 4,800-square-foot home offers the Bolens and their three sons - Kyler, Brody and Bentley - room to roam.

Rich colors, arched doorways and a wrought iron and cherry wood staircase highlight the home.

The kitchen features a custom corner cupboard and matching dining table designed by Amy Lochner, of Crafts by Amy, in North Manchester.

The Huntington Metro Kiwanis Club recently installed its new officers. Safety Council to hear environmental services chief

Jason Morrison, director of environmental services for Concentra EHS Services, will address members of the Huntington County Safety Council at their Oct. 10 luncheon meeting.

Morrison earned a degree in environmental science from the University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, and has more than 20 years of experience in the environmental field. He will discuss environmental compliance reporting requirements for human resources and safety employees.

Heritage Hall again open to cool-weather walkers

The Huntington Parks and Recreation Department's free seasonal walking program will begin on Monday, Oct. 1.
Heritage Hall at Hier's Park will be open to walkers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.; and every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Walkers may elect to participate in the "Walk Across Indiana" program, which challenges them to walk at least 140 miles - the distance across Indiana - by the end of April.

The "Walk the Indy 500" is an even bigger challenge, asking participants to walk 500 miles by the end of April.

PHH encouraging employees to enjoy benefits of walking

Parkview Huntington Hospital is encouraging employees and guests to "Park Farther" and enjoy the benefits of walking.

The Parkview LiVe staff, with help from the Parkview Huntington Hospital staff, spent several hours on Sept. 27 painting spots with special wording encouraging staff and visitors to park farther from buildings and increase walking for better physical fitness.

Designated spaces were painted in two large lots at the hospital, in the lot at the John B. Kay Medical Office Building and at the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA.

High school students get to meet college reps Oct. 9 at Manchester

High school students will get the chance to meet representatives from 45 colleges, universities and technical schools at the 2012 Wabash Regional College Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The free event is open 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the North Manchester campus of Manchester University.

All students and their families are invited,. No reservations are necessary for the event in the Union, on the east side of campus.

Karing for Kids taking names for Angel Tree

Karing for Kids is accepting referrals of children to receive Christmas gifts through the organization's Christmas Angel Tree project.

Referrals must be made by a school counselor or, if the child is not yet in school, by an area social service agency.

Children must live in Huntington or Wells counties.
They must be 18 years or younger, with 18-year-olds qualifying only if they are still in high school.
The deadline for referrals is Oct. 12.
