Trout, Wygant again lead HNHS spikers to win

Seniors Allyson Trout and Alexis Wygant again led the way as the Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team stopped visiting Northfield, 3-1, on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Climbing to 8-8 on the season, the Lady Vikings won a hardfought four-gamer, 26-24, 25-18, 25-27, 27-25.

Trout had team-highs with 26 assists and 11 kills, and she added seven digs and four blocks, while Wygant had a team-high 24 digs to go along with eight kills and four blocks.

Jessie Drew chipped in with 10 kills and tied with Josie Beaver for team-high in blocks with 13.

IWU outlasts Forester netmen

The Huntington University men's tennis team was outlasted by host Indiana Wesleyan University, 4-5, on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Vlad Khudziy and Diego Inurritegui were double winners for the Foresters, 3-3 overall and 3-1 in Crossroads League play, as each won their singles matches and was part of a winning doubles team.

HU women's soccer team to 4-1 with shutout of Manchester

The Huntington University women's soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season as five different players scored en route to a 5-0 win over visiting Manchester University on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

HU went into halftime with a 3-0 lead on goals by Erin Barclay, Kaitlyn Dreman and Bethany Quinn. Bethany Cardenas upped the count to 4-0 in the 82nd minute, then Elise Mamanu-Gray capped off the scoring by dribbling past three Spartan players and beating the Manchester goalie just before the end of the contest.

Mildred E. 'Millie' Smith

Mildred E. "Millie" Smith, 91, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at 5:23 p.m. at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Ms. Smith graduated from Huntington High School in 1940. She was employed as a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward, in Huntington, for 23 years and later worked at Our Sunday Visitor for 23 years. She retired in 1987. She was a long-time member of the Wednesday Afternoon Ladies' League at Oak Lanes.

She was born June 14, 1921, in Huntington to Jesse and Nellie Bettis Smith.

Cathy J. Hicks

Cathy Joan Hicks, 62, of Huntington, IN, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at 8:46 p.m. at Oakbrook Village, in Huntington.

Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker. She graduated from Monroe Central High School, Parker City, and attended Victory Tabernacle Church, in Huntington.

She was born Jan. 13, 1950, in Portland to Eugene and Betty Malog Bragg. She married Ronnie C. Hicks on March 17, 1983, in Mishawaka. Her husband survives.

Huntington's downtown fire station to close

Huntington's downtown fire station will close as the Huntington Fire Department adjusts to a reduction in the number of firefighters.

With the closing of the downtown station, the Condit Street fire station will be renovated so that firefighters and equipment can be divided between the Condit Street and Etna Avenue stations, Fire Chief Tim Albertson told members of the Huntington Common Council on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

The changes at the Condit Street station will mean the closure of the Neighborhood Recreation Center, which shares a building with the fire station.

School board reviews individual schools’ plans for improvement

Huntington County Community Schools has submitted its school improvement plans to the school board for review and approval.

The plans were introduced to the board during the biweekly meeting on Monday, Sept. 10.

The plans are part of Public Law 221 - Indiana's comprehensive accountability system for K -12 education.
Assistant Superintendent Chuck Grable explained each plan, describing differences between each school's one-year and three-year action plans.

Andrews council debates effectiveness of police longevity pay

Longevity pay for the police department was the primary issue at the monthly meeting of the Andrews Town Council on Monday, Sept. 10.

During the public hearing on the town's proposed 2013 budget, council President John Harshbarger voiced disapproval over the $8,640 budgeted for longevity pay for the police department, contending that the pay - which is in place to give employees in the department incentive to return each year - has traditionally not been effective at retaining employees.

Part of Warren will see power outage on Sept. 16

Power to a small area of Warren will be turned off for about four hours on Sunday, Sept. 16, Town Utility Manager Curt Day told memebrs of the Warren Town Council during their regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 10.

Crews will use that time to replace a pole and transformer, Day explained.

The affected area includes parts of Main to Wayne streets, and those businesses and residents will be notified of the scheduled outage.
