Special dove hunt for disabled vets set for Sept. 1

The Huntington County Veterans Council and the Indiana DNR Roush Fish and Wildlife Area have announced plans for a special dove hunt for disabled veterans and interested veterans who like to hunt.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1, from noon to 6 p.m.

Plans are being made to have a designated field for veterans with 10 stations. Each station will serve two veteran hunters.

Disabled veterans who are mobility challenged will be paired with a veteran who can serve as a guide.

Guides will also be able to hunt.

Local groups team up to help Jacquay family

A friend of the Jacquays, Johnson directed fund-raising efforts that included a hog roast and a silent auction to benefit the family. Johnson says he hopes the family can put the money toward back-to-school items for their children and rent for a house.

Three from county earn Questa Scholarships

Three Huntington County students have been accepted as Questa Scholars.

They are Mary Frances Easterday, a Concordia High School graduate attending Indiana University; Sara Karst, a Huntington North High School graduate attending Huntington University; and Alexandra Meyer, a Huntington North graduate attending the University of Saint Francis.

The Questa Foundation for Education, based in Fort Wayne, coordinates the college debt forgiveness program.

Alzheimer’s support group to meet Sept. 12

The next meeting of the Alzheimer's Association support group is Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m.

The meeting will be held at Parkview Huntington Hospital, 2001 Stults Rd., Huntington.

Participants in support groups receive emotional support, practical assistance in coping with the problems they face and the latest in information regarding research, association officials note.

All meetings are confidential and free of charge.

Restoration work continues on quartet of abandoned cemeteries in Jackson Township

Restoration work continues on four abandoned cemeteries in Jackson Township, with 49 gravestones repaired this summer at Roanoke Cemetery on Roanoke Road south of Roanoke.

A restoration expert worked on the cemetery stones in July, his second visit in two years. During the previous visit, 47 stones were repaired.

Huntington House Emergency Shelter earns tax credits for eligible donors in Indiana

The Huntington House Emergency Shelter has been awarded tax credits by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) for the Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP).

The organization was awarded $7,240 in state tax credits, which are available to eligible donors in Indiana.

Eligible donors can make a contribution to the Huntington House Emergency Shelter/Community and Family Services.

Donors will receive 50 percent of the donation amount as a tax credit for next year. The minimum donation is $100, which will result in $50 of tax credits.

Kids’ clothes trade day Aug. 25 in Andrews

Crossroad Connections will hold a New2U Kidz Clothes Trade Day on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Andrews Community Building, located behind the Andrews Town Hall on Main Street.

The location may change if a wheelchair ramp at the community building is not completed by Aug. 25.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., parents can bring in lightly worn clothing and trade for the next size up. Clothing may be purchased from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
