City officials have new tool for cleaning neglected properties

City officials have a new tool to use in cleaning up neglected properties, despite misgivings by several members of the Huntington Common Council.

The council, with Mayor Brooks Fetters casting the tie-breaking vote, approved an ordinance that will make it easier for the city to clean up properties whose owners have not responded to clean-up orders.

Currently, the city is required to send a certified letter to the owner of record and wait at least five days before sending a city crew out to mow high grass and remove weeds.

Andrews council to analyze utility rates

The Andrews Town Council will commission a rate study of the town's utility rates.

Steven Brock, of Therber, Brock and Associates, a municipal financial consulting firm, appeared at the council's Aug. 13 meeting to explain what a rate study entails and the services his firm would provide.

The council decided to commission a study by Brock's firm so that an accurate utility deposit fee could be determined and because Andrews has not had a rate study since done 1993, far longer than the 10-year interval Brock suggested as being standard.
