SWCD to observe Stewardship Week April 29 to May 6

The Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District will take part in the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) observation of Stewardship Week April 29 through May 6.

The 2012 Stewardship Week theme is "Soil to Spoon," recognizing soil as the foundation of all food.

Kyle Lund, Ned Ruble, Andy Ambriole, Joe Landrum and L. Joe Carroll serve as district supervisors for the Huntington County SWCD.

Fifth graders graduate D.A.R.E. program

Markle man graduates from Army basic training

Army Pvt. Austin J. Hormann, of Markle, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.

Sweet Deals Consignment opens in Huntington

Sweet Deals Consignment is now open at 1274 S. Jefferson St. in Huntington.

Brandi Linville says she decided to open the shop after her mother gave her the idea.

The shop is a 50-50-consignment shop. Those bringing in clothing to sell set the price. If the item sells, the seller will receive half the profit and the store keeps the other half.

Linville says she will pay consignors at the end of every month by sending them out a check for what has sold, unless it is a very small amount in which case she will carry the balance over.

ReStore to celebrate Earth Day Saturday

The Huntington County Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 325 Hauenstein Rd., Huntington, will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Master Gardener Dick Wymer will present a workshop at 10 a.m., demonstrating how to put together a rain barrel. At 11 a.m., Rose Meldrum will show how to turn that rain barrel into a work of art.

Lowe's of Marion will demonstrate tile cutting and utilization at 1 p.m.

Susan Miller and Bobbi Ehler will present the 2 p.m. workshop, demonstrating how to recycle a skid into a potting bench.

Easterday calls it a career after serving banking customers 43 years

Bippus State Bank in Huntington held an open house on Friday, April 13, for long-time employee John Easterday, who retired after 20 years of service.

Originally from Columbia City, Easterday has spent the majority of his adult life in the banking industry.

"I worked at Community State Bank for 23 years prior to coming to Bippus," says Easterday. "My first day in banking was June 2, 1961. Combined, I've got 43 years of service in banking."

He adds that the reason for his long tenure in the industry is the customers he has created relationships with over the years.

Starter Calf ID day is Saturday at Hier’s Park

Huntington County 4-H starter calf identification will take place on Saturday, April 21, at the cattle barns at Hier's Park.

All youth enrolled in the starter calf project must bring their animals between 9 and 11 a.m. to be weighed, tagged with an electronic identification ear tag and a county ear tag.

Forms were mailed to youth enrolled in the project but if youth have not yet received the information, they are asked to contact the County Extension Office immediately.

Associated Churches to hold an ‘appreciation meeting’ on April 24

The Associated Churches will hold an "appreciation meeting" on Tuesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 500 MacGahan St., Huntington.

All member churches are asked to send a representative.

The evening will include an update on the By the Book weekday religious education program and stories by teachers in the program. Board members will be introduced and Bibles for seniors will be dedicated.

 

Szewczyk to sign book

Huntington County resident Sana Szewczyk has published her first book, "Under a Ginkgo Tree & Other Stories."

The book is about Szewczyk's childhood in Poland and the experiences she had during her first year in the United States.

It is available on Ama zon.com and will be available in the future on Kindle and through extended channels including Barnes and Noble.

It is also available at Wabash Carnegie Library.

A book signing party will be held on April 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Modoc's Market, downtown Wabash.
