Paul M. Creager

Paul M. Creager, 90, of South Bend, IN, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, July 17, 2011.

Mr. Creager served in the United States Army during World War II and was in Germany as part of the 8th Infantry Division liberating unit. He worked as a welder.

He was born Oct. 5, 1920. His first marriage was in Belfast, Ireland, to Maureen Molloy, who preceded him in death after 31 years of marriage. His second marriage was to Audrey Craig, who preceded him in death after 25 years of marriage.

Rose E. Kaufman

Rose Elnor Kaufman, 87, of Ossian, IN, and having ties to Markle, IN, died Monday, July 15, 2011, in Bluffton.

Mrs. Kaufman had been employed as head of housekeeping at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Bluffton, retiring in 1981.

She was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Branch County, MI, to J.C. and Edith Spade. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Max Kaufman.

Mary L. Young

Mary L. Young, 95, of Clearwater, FL, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the home of her son, Michael S. Young, in Clearwater, FL.

She was born July 19, 1916, to Albert and Coreen Eckert. She married Ralph F. Young on July 27, 1934, in the rectory of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Huntington. Her husband preceded her in death on May 13, 1987.

Survivors include two sons, Michael S. Young, of Clearwater, FL, and Robert F. (Marsha) Young, of Morganton, NC; three grandsons, Mark, Robert and Ryan; and five great-grandchildren.

Tool collectors honor Ring for 39 years of ‘being helpful’

The wooden tool Mel Ring holds up with admiration bears the date 1847.

"I'm sure it was made by the user," the Huntington resident says. "After he bedded down the horses and milked the cow, he sat by the fire and whittled that out."

The hand-made tool - a marking gauge - was probably made to be used when its maker replaced his log home with a grander domicile, Ring believes.

Eighth annual Huntington Bicycle Challenge has new sponsors and tours

The eighth annual Huntington Bicycle Challenge will be held Sept. 17, featuring five tours ranging in length from 3.5 to 39 miles.

The cycling event, previously co-sponsored by the Huntington County Visitor Bureau and 3 Rivers Velo Sport Bike Club, is being organized this year by Pathfinder Services, Parkview Home Health and Hospice and 3 Rivers Velo Sport Bike Club.

Proceeds will go to Pathfinder Services to fund summer camp scholarships for teenagers with developmental disabilities and to Parkview Home Health and Hospice's care for the terminally ill.

Local YSB to receive funding through state’s child restraint distribution grant

The Youth Services Bureau of Huntington County will receive funding through the Indiana Child Restraint Distribution Grant (CRDG).

Grant proceeds will be used to educate families about the importance and proper use of child restraints.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) awarded 13 CRDG grants for 2011. Funded primarily through judgments collected against violators of Indiana's child restraint law, the grant provides organizations with funding to purchase and distribute child restraint systems for the target families.

HU’s Upchurch publishes devotional

Dr. Rick Upchurch, director of the EXCEL Adult Degree Programs at Huntington University, recently published a devotional on the Book of James, titled "Discipleship with James: Devotionals for Spiritual Growth."

This devotional works through James over the course of a month, providing insights and observations from the text and connecting the words to day-to-day living. Included with the devotionals is a bonus retreat schedule, which can be used individually or as part of a small group experience.
