Christopher M. 'Chris' Braun

Christopher M. "Chris" Braun, 49, of Markle, IN, died Saturday afternoon, May 28, 2011.

Mr. Braun graduated from high school in Wheaton, MN, in 1981 and studied welding at Moorhead Tech in Moorhead, MN.

He was born Aug. 6, 1961, in Fergus Falls, MN, to Mark and Marilyn Braun. His parents survive. He married Janice Kellen on Sept, 22, 2006. His wife survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Mattie AnnaMae Braun; two brothers, Grant (Shelly) Braun and Chad Braun; a sister, Barbara (Christopher) Riddle; and a sister-in-law, Cheri Braun.

Vikings club Jay County 15-0; face North Side at 5 for sectional championship

The Huntington North High School baseball team dropped eight runs on Jay County in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 15-0 shellacking of the Patriots in the second round of the Homestead Baseball Sectional Tournament, earlier today, Monday, May 30.

The win puts the Vikings, 26-6, into the championship game against Fort Wayne North Side today at 5 p.m. North beat Fort Wayne South Side 5-3 in eight innings.

Tay L. Leonhardt

Tay L. Leonhardt, 40, of LaFontaine, IN, and formerly of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at 1:30 a.m. at her home.

She was born Nov. 10, 1970, in Elyria, OH, to Larry J. and Denise E. McDaniel Brewster. She married Joe A. Leonhardt Jr. on Oct. 12, 1997, in Huntington. Her parents survive in Huntington and her husband survives in LaFontaine.

David S. Chalfant

David Scott Chalfant, 38, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, May 29, 2011, at his residence.

Mr. Chalfant won a silver medal in bowling in the National Special Olympics, in Dover, DE.

He was born Aug. 3, 1972, in Kankakee, IL. His parents, Richard L. and Judith E. (Ellet) Chalfant, survive in Huntington.

Additional survivors include a sister, Dorothy (Dr. Christopher) Ray, of Columbus, OH.

HNHS baseball team clubs Jay County 15-0 in sectional

The Huntington North High School baseball team clubbed Jay County 15-0 in five innings today, Monday, May 30, in the second round of the Homestead Sectional Baseball Tournament.

The Vikings will face the winner between Fort Wayne North Side and Fort Wayne South Side this evening at 5 for the championship.

VFW honor guard pays last respects to county’s veterans

They've buried all the World War I veterans; now, they're putting the guys from World War II in the ground.
Occasionally, they'll gather to pay their last respects to a contemporary, bonded by common service in a more recent war.

"Just about every cemetery you go to now, there's somebody in it we helped bury," says Jerry Walling, a Vietnam veteran who heads up the honor guard of Huntington's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689.
Even his own era is not exempt.

"We've done a lot of Vietnam veterans," says Walling, who earned a Purple Heart in that war.

Viking New Tech hosts inaugural portfolio

Viking New Tech at Huntington North High School hosted its inaugural portfolio night on Tuesday, May 24, giving students, teachers and parents a chance to evaluate the program's first year.

VNT ninth-graders (the only grade currently in the program) prepared online portfolios to present to friends, family and staff. The portfolios consisted of media presentations, photo compilations, resumes, career plans and a sampling of schoolwork.

Friends of Library book sale June 8-11

The Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale, starting on June 8, at the Huntington City-Township Library. The group raises funds through the annual book sale, recycling magazines and a coffee station, located inside the library.

Friends of the Library will sponsor a used book sale at Huntington City-Township Public Library Wednesday, June 8, to Saturday, June 11.

Vintage books will be offered at the sale on silent auction. Final bids must be in by 2 p.m. on Saturday.
On Wednesday, a preview sale will be offered to Friends of the Library members from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The preview sale is for member only, but new members may join Friends of the Library at the door if they pay membership costs. Members are entitled to receive two free books at the preview sale.

Experiencing nature as gift from God at Victory Noll three-day program

Experiencing nature as a gift from God is the focus of the three-day program, "Our Earth: A Place of Encountering God," on Monday through Wednesday, June 13-15 at Victory Noll Center in Huntington.

Led by Jan Parker and Victory Noll Center Director Sue Wilhelm, the retreat celebrates the rich gifts of the Earth. Each session begins outdoors with gentle T'ai Chi practice.
