March crackdown in county nets four arrests on alcohol-related charges

The Huntington County Sheriff's Department announced that four alcohol-related arrests were made during the "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." March crackdown.

In all, agency officers dedicated 41 hours of overtime towards Indiana's annual mobilization against impaired and dangerous driving.

In addition to the arrests, citations were issued for various traffic violations including speeding, left of center and driving while suspended.

Jane A. Thomas

Jane Anne Thomas, 87, of Huntington County, IN, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at 8:50 p.m. at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home.

Ms. Thomas was a 1941 graduate of West Union High School. She studied music at Ball State University, and graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1967. She was a piano instructor for more than 40 years. She later moved back to Huntington to help with family and the farm.

Rethlake homer in ninth leads Lady Vikings past Eastbrook

A home run by Erin Rethlake in the bottom of the ninth inning pushed the Huntington North High School varsity softball team past visiting Eastbrook, 6-4, on Thursday, March 31.

The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the seventh inning, the last of regulation, after Rethlake scored the first HNHS run in the bottom of the first and Eastbrook returned the favor in the top of the seventh.

Lady Viking track team second again

Winning first place in four events, the Huntington North High School girls' varsity track team took second in a three-way meet with Snider and Homestead high schools on Wednesday, March 30.

Natalie Spahr won the 1,600-meter race in 5:40.5; Liesl Davenport took the shot put with a distance of 34 feet, nine inches; Kayla Patrick won the 800-meter run in 2:26.9; and Gretchen Spahr won the 3200-meter run in 11:51.6.

Davenport's double wins lead HNHS girls to second

Liesl Davenport led the Huntington North High School girls' varsity track team to a second-place finish in a three-way meet with Warsaw and North Side on Tuesday, March 29.

Davenport won the shot put with an arm of 33 feet, 5 inches, and took discus with a throw of 115 feet, 8.5 inches.

Warsaw won the meet with 82 points. North Side took third with 26 points.

HU softball team sweeps Taylor

The Huntington University softball team swept host Taylor University on Thursday, March 31, stomping the Trojans 10-0 in game one and then winning 6-4 in the second game.

Abby Dilling had the game one win for HU, throwing a complete game and allowing six hits in five innings.

Foresters fall twice to Marian

The Huntington University baseball team fell twice by the same margin, 5-1, to visiting Marian University in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 31.

In the first game, Huntington, now 6-15, 3-3 in conference, scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth as Mitch Bowers singled to score Jamon Hammel.
Marian had scored a run in the top of the second, but then added four runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away.

Eric Schultz had two hits on the day to lead HU at the plate.

School board approves summer program expenditures

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees unanimously approved proposals for both summer school and band during its meeting on Monday, March 28.

In introducing the items to the board, Superintendent of Schools Tracey Shafer explained that the proposals are similar to last summer's approved programs.

Courses offered at the high school level include Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II. The two sessions will be held June 2 to June 24 and July 5 to July 29.
