Joseph O. Harmeyer

Joseph O. Harmeyer, 64, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, March 13, 2011, at 12:20 p.m. at his home.

Mr. Harmeyer attended Ivy Tech Community College, Fort Wayne, for two years, studying in the heating and cooling field. He had been employed by the Fort Wayne Foundry, Columbia City, for 10 years, and worked as a security officer for U.S. Security, Fort Wayne, for three years.

He was born Oct. 7, 1946, in Fort Wayne to Valorus and Betty Kramer Harmeyer. He married Judy Ann Lee on Oct. 3, 1981, in Fort Wayne. His wife survives.

Cindy Paul's fifth grade class at Lancaster Elementary School dominated the region during The Stock Market Game for fall 2010.

And this was Paul's first year participating.

The Lancaster teacher had the first, second and third place teams for the Northeastern Indiana region of the elementary level game, and the first and second place teams finished first and third in the state, respectively, for the level as well.

Forester men’s tennis team earns national ranking

After finishing the fall portion of their schedule with a perfect 13-0 record, the Forester men's tennis team has earned national attention as they are currently ranked 26th in the NAIA national poll.

Several Foresters also received individual recognition at the national level. Freshman Vladislav Khudziy, of Moscow, Russia, is ranked 5th in the national poll, while teammate Augusto Velez, of Lima, Peru, is currently 45th in the national standings.

First Presbyterian Church hosts Lenten supper, study on Thursday

The First Presbyterian Church in Huntington is hosting a Lenten supper and study on Thursday, March 17.

The supper begins at 6:30 p.m. and the study will follow at 7 p.m.

The topic for the study is, "Gospel Portraits of Jesus: A Lenten Study - Jesus is called Rabbi, Teacher and Master."

The event is free and open to the public.

First Presbyterian Church is located at 50 E. Tipton St. in Huntington and can be contacted at 356-8680.

 

Startup meeting set for softball

The Huntington Parks and Recreation Department will hold an informational and sign-up meeting for its summer co-ed softball league on Thursday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Neighborhood Recreation Center in Huntington.

Entry fees, dates and new rules will be discussed at the meeting. A coach or representative from each team is encouraged to attend.

Lancaster Elementary School is lone Huntington County representative on Four-Star list for 2009-10 year

Lancaster Elementary School is one of the 188 public schools across Indiana - and the only school in Huntington County - to be recognized as a Four-Star School for the 2009-10 school year.

The Indiana Department of Education released the list Tuesday, March 8, at the same time introducing a new method DOE officials used to determine which schools earned the honor.

Lancaster Principal John Purcell called the recognition "very humbling" and credits the hard work of the students, teachers and parents. He says each role is significant.

Poverty simulation exercise to be held on April 27

Purdue Extension of Huntington County will present a Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) on Wednesday, April 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Victory Noll Center in Huntington.

This learning tool has been created as a way to help people understand the realities of poverty. During a simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families. Some are assigned roles as TANF recipients, some are disabled, and some are senior citizens on Social Security.
