Grant will help Pathfinder educate home buyers

Pathfinder Services has been awarded a $105,000 grant from NeighborWorks America.

The flexible funding will be used in a variety of ways, Pathfinder spokesmen say, including educating potential homeowners and revitalizing neighborhoods.

"The funds from NeighborWorks America assist our community development division to continue to educate potential home owners on what it takes to own a home," says Jan Baumgartner, director of Pathfinder Community Connections.

Personal property assessment forms due May 16

Personal property assessment forms from businesses and farmers must be filed with the Huntington County assessor's office no later than May 16, Huntington County Assessor Terri Boone has announced.

The assessor's office will not mail out forms or reminder cards this year, Boone says.

The forms are available through the county assessor's page on the Huntington County website, www.huntington.in.us, or from the Department of Local Government Finance website at www.in.gov/dlgf/4971.htm.

American Cancer Society holding Daffodil Day on Thursday, March 17

The daffodil, the first flower of spring, has been adopted by the American Cancer Society as a symbol of hope.

The society will offer area residents a chance to "Give daffodils - give hope" during its annual Daffodil Day on Thursday, March 17.

Bunches or vases of daffodils will be sold from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day in the mall area of Parkview Huntington Hospital. In addition, volunteers can deliver the flowers to local businesses and individuals in the Huntington, Andrews, Bippus and Roanoke areas.

Results of choral solo and ensemble contest

The choral solo and ensemble contest was held Jan. 29 at Bellmont High School, and many Riverview students received awards.

Gold medal soloists were: Lina Willard, vocal solo; Courtlyn Hall, vocal solo; William Murray, state entry on piano; Wyatt Landrum, piano solo; Sydni Fife, vocal solo; Emma Davidson, vocal solo; Sarah Hunnicutt, vocal solo; and Diana Nava, vocal solo.

Silver medal soloists were: Makayla Borders, vocal solo; Kirsten Roller, vocal solo; and Samantha Roller, vocal solo.

HCS registration date is March 20

Huntington Catholic School will hold registration for its fall preschool classes on Sunday, March 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Huntington Catholic School Primary Building, 820 Cherry St.

The school offers a class for 3-year-olds on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and a class for 4-year-olds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Children must be either 3 or 4 by Aug. 1, 2011.

A registration fee is charged.

Eloise E. Giddens

Eloise E. Giddens, 95, of Wabash, IN, and a native of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at 8:10 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mrs. Giddens was a 1933 graduate of Huntington High School. She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Wabash, and the church's Rosary Guild. She retired in 1981 from Siebe Controls in North Manchester.

She was born Jan. 17, 1916, in Huntington to John E. and Susanna Barter Bauer. She married Charles Giddens on Oct. 1, 1938. Her husband preceded her in death in 1983.

HCCSC board to look at tough choices in next few months, starting Monday, March 14

The Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees will be looking at some tough choices in the next few months, starting tonight, Monday, March 14.

As the academic benchmarks that students must hit increase over time, the amount of money schools have is dropping.

"We're faced with academic challenges and financial challenges ..." Superintendent of Huntington County Community Schools Tracey Shafer says.

Decision on proposed new water treatment facility could come next Tuesday, March 15

A decision on the scope of a proposed new water treatment facility - and an accompanying water rate increase - could be made at a March 15 special meeting of the Huntington Common Council.

The council must make a decision by that date in order to meet deadlines for receiving a low-interest loan from the State Revolving Fund to pay for the project, Wessler Engineering representative Sara Altizer told council members during their meeting on Tuesday, March 8.
