Senior Downey leads three Vikings to state wrestling tourney

Led by senior Colin Downey, three Huntington North High School wrestlers will be on the mats at the IHSAA State Wrestling Tournament in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19.

Downey finished third at 135 pounds at the Woodlan Semi-State Wrestling Tournament in Fort Wayne on Saturday, Feb. 12, to punch his ticket to state, and he will be joined by freshman Kyle Jolas at 112 pounds and junior Andrew Mason at 285 pounds, both of whom got the fourth and last qualifying spots in their respective weight classes.

William O. 'Bill' Swain

William O. "Bill" Swain Jr., 80, of Roanoke, IN, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Swain worked for W&W Gravel and Concrete, owned Swain Excavating Inc. in Roanoke and B & R Veal Farm with his wife Rose. He was also a heavy equipment operator at Operating Engineers Local 103, retiring in 1997. After he retired he worked for the Roanoke Park Department as the "park ranger".

First-half struggles doom Lady Vikings in sectional against South Side

The Huntington North High School girls' basketball team dug itself a big first half hole with poor shooting and turnovers and wound up losing to Fort Wayne South Side, 73-56, in the Marion Sectional Basketball Tournament on Friday, Feb. 11.

The Lady Vikings hit just 5 of 19 field goal attempts in the opening half on the way to falling into a 30-17 halftime hole. They came back in the second half to blaze the nets for a season high half of 15 of 21, 71.4 percent, but the Lady Archers went them a bit better at 11 of 15, 73.3 percent, to easily hold on for the win.

HNHS gymnasts win three events on way to wins over Homestead, Heritage

The Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team grabbed first-place finishes in three of four events and placed six others in top four slots to total 102.9 points and win a three-way meet between the Lady Vikings, Homestead and Heritage on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Lauren Bradburn led a four-person sweep in the vault with a score of 9.15, Stephanie Freeman was first on the uneven bars with an 8.95 and Jessica Baker took the balance beam with a 9.40.

Crestview wrestlers get first win of season

The Crestview Middle School wrestling team took its first win of the season by defeating St. Vincent, 40-33, on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Winners by pin for Crestview, now 1-2, were Noah Kitt, Gunnar Wibel, Tony Frantz, Alex Hughes, Corbin Clarke and Layne Emery.

Mark Hultz was a winner by major decision, 12-4. Zach Lavine won in a 5-2 decision, and Joe Bentz won in an 8-1 decision.

In exhibition, winners by pin were Wibel, Hultz, Frantz, Alyssa Schuller and Katie Leeper.

 

William M. 'Doc' Kline

William M. "Doc" Kline, 83, of Fort Wayne, IN, and having family members in Huntington, IN, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 at 12:05 a.m. at his home.

Mr. Kline was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked as a sales manager at WKJG television for 40 years, retiring in 1989. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Friars clubs.

He was born June 21, 1927, in Fort Wayne to William O. and Bess VanArsdol Kline. He married Mary A. Baumbaugh, who preceded him in death.
