Cathy A. Smeltzer

Cathy Ann Smeltzer, 55, of Bluffton, IN, and a native of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at 7 a.m. at her home.

Mrs. Smeltzer had been employed by Kitco as an inspector for 23 years. She was a 1972 graduate of Bluffton High School.

She was born May 28, 1954, in Huntington to William and Norma Walmsley Clanin. Her father survives in Bluffton. She married Gary D. Smeltzer on March 3, 1973, in Reifsburg. Her husband survives.

Salvation Army approaching 2/3 of funds needed for unemployment help

As of Wednesday, March 11, at 3 p.m., the Salvation Army of Huntington County has received $5,500 in donations and pledges toward securing up to $18,000 for matching funds for the recently unemployed in the county.

Capt. Tim Sell reported that major contributors "publicly rallying with their support" up to that point have been the United Way of Huntington County, $2,000; Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church, with a pledge of at least $1,000; and Victory Noll sisters.

Marvin L. Harvey

Marvin Leroy Harvey, 79, of Upland, IN, and having worked in Van Buren, IN, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at 5:40 a.m. at University Nursing Center in Upland.

Mr. Harvey worked for Weaver Popcorn in Van Buren, and retired after 31 years of service. He also gave 31 years to the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department. He was active in the Central Christian Church in Van Buren.

He was born July 10, 1929, in Wells County to Homer and Nola Hoover Harvey. He married Janice Woodruff on June 3, 1967, in Van Buren. His wife survives.

Martha J. Nichols

Martha J. Nichols, 84, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at 4:15 a.m. at Parkview Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

Mrs. Nichols was a homemaker.

She was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Texas to Tom and Suzie James Curtis. She married Delbert Nichols on July 4, 1946, in Markedtree, AR. He preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1987.

Evelyn N. Johnson

Evelyn N. Johnson, 93, a resident of Heritage Pointe, Warren, IN, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center, Bluffton.

Mrs. Johnson, a former resident of Montpelier, had worked as a bookkeeper at Hoosier Grain for 12 years and at the Delaware County Farm Bureau for 15 years. She graduated from Hartford City High School in 1933 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Montpelier.

Ann G. Lancaster

Ann G. Lancaster, 65, of Overton, TX, and having family members in Huntington, IN, died Monday, March 9, 2009.

She was born Sept. 29, 1943, in Constantine, MI, to Harold and Mildred McConnell Beemon.

She graduated from Constantine (MI) High School and continued her education in Minnesota.

Survivors include a son, Shane (Esther) Lancaster, of South Whitley; a daughter, Jennifer (Joseph) Hupp, of Huntington; and four grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.

 

Schools, county will work together on signs

School and county officials are working together to correct signage problems and deficiencies regarding school zones and speed limits on county roads near local schools.

County Commissioners' President Tom Wall and County Highway Superintendent Troy Hostetler presented information on the issue to the Huntington County Community School Corporation's Board of Trustees during their regular meeting Monday night, March 9.

Local Salvation Army seeking to match funds to help local unemployed

Due to the sharp increase in unemployment in Huntington County, The Salvation Army has established Hoosier Help for Hardship, a community partnership and a grant opportunity which could mean as much as $27,000 in assistance for the newly unemployed and their families.

Janet M. Richhart

Janet Marie Richhart, 57, of Huntington, IN, died at 6:15 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at 6:15 a.m. at her home in Huntington.

Mrs. Richhart worked at the Huntington North High School in food service. Prior to that, she worked at Bendix for 20 years as a production tech. She graduated in 1970 from Huntington North High School.

She was born in Huntington on Oct. 20, 1951, to Dean and Vada Shearer Mitchell. She married Thomas W. Richhart on July 26, 1969, in Huntington Her husband survives.

Michael P. Hadley

Michael Philip Joseph Hadley, 65, of Fort Wayne, IN, and formerly of Huntington, IN, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at 12:43 p.m. at Riverbend Health Care Center, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Hadley was a machine operator for 31 years at GE, retiring in 1997. He then worked at Webb Converting (previously KT Industry) from 1999 to 2003. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and was a member of IUE local 901.
