Lancaster lists perfect attendance for second grading quarter

Lancaster Elementary School has announced the names of students who achieved perfect attendance for the second grading period of the 2010-11 school year.

They are:

Barrett Barscz, Josi Barscz, Kaitlyn Berry, Emma Bickel, Lillian Biehl, Alexander Bishop, Charlotte Borland, Robert Borland, William Borland and Jonathan Brown.

Also, Anthony Bryant, Rachel Bryant, Adyn Chenoweth, Eli Christman, Evan Christman, Dakota Cocklin, Wyatt Davis, Eben Dawson, Isaiah Decker and Kyle Deetz.

Shively's FT sharpshooting leads Foresters past Cougars

Fouling Tyler Shively in the second half was a poor strategy for host Spring Arbor as the Huntington University junior hit 17 of 18 charity tosses to help lead the Foresters to an 83-78 victory on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Shively hit 10 of 10 charity tosses in the games final four minutes and HU hit 16 of its last 18 points from the stripe on the way to improving to 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the Mid-Central Conference.

A career-best 32 points by the Cougars' DJ Baisden had Spring Arbor fighting to the end despite dropping to 11-11 overall, 3-5 in the conference.

Green leads way for HU in victory over Spring Arbor

Junior Kelsey Green scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Huntington University women's basketball team to a 70-43 blasting of visiting Spring Arbor on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Foresters built a 35-20 lead after the first half and never looked back on their way to improving their season record to 12-7, 4-3 in the Mid-Central Conference.

Lauren Meese scored 14 points, Sarah Miller had 10 and Allison Greene came off the bench with eight for HU.

Lorraine 'Lorry' Goldenberg

Lorraine "Lorry" Goldenberg, 88, of Huntington, IN, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at 2:22 p.m. at Parkview Huntington Hospital.

Mrs. Goldenberg was a homemaker and was active in several community organizations, including ACRES Inc., Girl Scouts of America - Limberlost Council, the 10th Mountain Division Veterans Association and the PTA. She was a member of Congregation Achduth Vesholom in Fort Wayne. She graduated as valedictorian in 1939 from Huntington High School, and went on to receive her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

John W. Whitt

John W. Whitt, 71, of South Whitley, IN, and having family members in Huntington, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at 7:27 a.m. at his home.

Mr. Whitt was a graduate of Prestonburg High School and served with the Kentucky National Guard. He spent his career in the construction trade with D&C Construction in South Whitley. He was a member of South Whitley United Methodist Church and the South Whitley Lions Club., and he assisted the Whitko football team as a spotter.

Lady Vikings' free throw marksmanship earns close win over Anderson

Connecting on 23 of 25 free throws gave the Huntington North High School girls' varsity basketball team the edge it needed to defeat visiting Anderson High School 61-58 on Friday night, Jan. 14.

Liesl Davenport led the Lady Vikes, now 7-7 and 3-2 in the North Central Conference, by scoring 17 points while going 4 for 10 from the field and 8 for 8 at the foul line. Kayla Schenkel offered support with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. Schenkel connected on 5 of 12 shots and 5 of 7 free throws.
