Dennis E. Mann

Dennis Edward Mann, 59, of Huntington, IN, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at 7:46 a.m. at Oakbrook Village Nursing Home in Huntington.

Mr. Mann was a graduate of Marion High School in 1969 and Vincennes University.

He worked for C & N Shoe Company in Marion and also the Salamonie Reservoir.

He was born Dec. 28, 1949, in Indianapolis to Dane Edward and Eleanor Krause Mann. His mother survives in Huntington.

Also surviving is a brother, Lee Arthur Mann, of Long Grove, IL.

Davenport's assists help HU hold off IWU in MCC semifinal

Two late assists by Lauren Davenport helped the Huntington University women's basketball team escape visiting Indiana Wesleyan, 67-64, on Friday, Feb. 27, in semifinal action in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament.

HU, 23-6 and the tourney second seed, will host fourth seed Taylor on Monday, March 2, in the MCC championship contest.

Taylor upset top seed Bethel to earn its berth in the championship contest.

Vikes shell Manchester in regular season finale, 76-25

Tannan Peters scored 18 points and Taylor Harris had 17 to lead the Huntington North High School boys' basketball team to a 76-25 shellacking of visiting Manchester in the Vikings' regular season finale on Friday, Feb. 27.

Rob Sands added 12 points for HNHS, 7-13, and Will Schenkel had nine.

The Vikings turned a 16-12 first quarter advantage into the start of a blowout with a 19-5 run in the second quarter. A 24-3 beatdown in the third quarter gave them a 59-20 lead heading in the fourth quarter, allowing HNHS Coach Joe Bradburn to give serious minutes to his full bench.

Donald R. Johnson

Donald R. “Porky” Johnson, 45, of New Castle, IN, and formerly of Huntington, IN, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, in New Castle.

Mr. Johnson had worked in construction for Pin Point Directional Drill, Huntington, for five years. He was a member of Eagles Lodge 823, Huntington.

He was born May 2, 1963, in Albion, NY, to Marvin G. and Jannie B. Gilbreath Johnson. His mother survives in Huntington.

HNHS gymnasts beat South Side, Elmhurst Wednesday

The Huntington North High School varsity gymnastics team beat out South Side and Elmhurst to take first place in a meet on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Huntington North had a team score of 100.950 to Elmhurst's 85.890 and South Side's 50.350.

Jessica Baker was the all-around leader and placed first in all four events, vault, bars, beam and floor exercises.

Maryssa Campbell was second all-around and placed second on beam and floor exercises. Olivia Eckert placed third in vault, bars and floor exercises. Macy Good had a second place finish in vault and third in the beam.

Registration to start for Andrews Lions Baseball

Registration for the 2009 season of Andrews Lions Baseball will open on Thursday, March 5.

Participants may sign up on Thursdays, March 5, 13 and 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays, March 7, 14 and 18, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. All registration sessions will be held at the Andrews Ball Park across from Andrews Elementary School.

Andrews Lions Baseball offers T-Ball, for children ages 4 through 7, and Coaches Pitch, for children ages 8 through 12. Children must be in those age ranges as of May 1, 2009.
Fees must be paid when the children register.

Warren baseball, softball leagues accepting registration

The Warren baseball and softball league is currently accepting registrations for the 2009 season.

Age divisions are T-Ball, 5 and 6 years; Coach's Pitch, 7 and 8 years; Junior Girls Softball, 9 to 12 years; Junior Little League, 9 to 12 years; Senior Girls Softball, 13 to 17 years and Senior Pony League Baseball, 13 to 17 years.

Players who are signed up for Huntington County League are not eligible to participate.

The deadline for registration is March 29.

Roanoke Youth Sports accepting T-ball, baseball, softball registrations

Roanoke Youth Sports is accepting registrations for it 2009 T-Ball, baseball and girls' softball season.

T-Ball, for youth 4 to 6 years, will be held on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

Children 6 to 8 years can participate in coach's pitch, on Wednesday or Thursday evenings. A pitching machine will be used.

Girls' softball is available for youth 9 to 17 years and will be played on Mondays.

Sand Lot baseball, for ages 9 to 13 years, will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Shirts and hats will be provided.

Olive J. Santon

Olive J. Santon, 84, of Fort Wayne, IN, and a native of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Hamilton House in Fort Wayne.

Miss Stanton was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Huntington to Edgar R. and Anna Bowne Santon.
