HNHS spikers up early but fall to Eastbrook

After winning the first set, the Huntington North High School varsity volleyball team dropped the next three sets to lose to visiting Eastbrook on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The Lady Vikings edged Eastbrook in the the first set 25-23, then lost 20-25, 25-27, 11-25.

Este Stoffel and Alexis Wygant led the offense, with Stoffel recording 12 kills and one ace, while Wygant had six kills and two aces. Kayla Koch supported the effort with 25 assists.

On defense, Stoffel led the way with 20 digs. Josie Eckert added none digs and Taylor Hiers had seven digs.

Grace stuns HU women's tennis team

In its last conference game before the Mid-Central Conference tournament, the Huntington University women's tennis team was stunned by visiting Grace, 9-0, on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

In singles, Haley Neiderhiser lost 7-6, (7-2), 8-6 at No. 1. Aleksandra Spasic fell at No. 2 6-0, 6-3. At No. 3, Kristen Lahman dropped 6-4, 6-3. Lauren Sunderman fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4; Erica Abel lost 8-6, 6-1 at No. 5; and Stacie Cressman was defeated at No. 6 6-1, 6-3.

Vikes' JV booters take second-half pounding against Homestead

After grabbing a one-goal lead in the first half, the Huntington North High School boys' junior varsity soccer team ended up losing to visiting Homestead 7-3 on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The Vikings, now 7-2-3, took charge of the first half, earning a 2-1 lead at halftime. Homestead had other plans, however, and pounded in six goals in the second half while Huntington only managed one.

Tyler Henline, Dylan Campbell and Connor Brown all had goals for the Vikings. Brown and Wilson each had an assist.

Goalkeeper David Acra had seven saves.

 

Lady Eagle spikers lose to W.A.C.H.E. Lady Warriors

The Huntington Lady Eagles homeschool volleyball team fell to the W.A.C.H.E. Lady Warriors in three sets, with scores of 23-25, 19-25, 21-25 on Friday, Sept. 17.

Marina Stoffel led the team with 15 digs, six kills and five aces. Kelsey Featherston led the defense with 27 digs while adding eight kills.

Kaleigh Shultz had 10 assists, 10 blocks, six kills and four aces, while Tabby Johnson and Tatum Johnson each contributed 12 digs.

 

John E. Guenin

John Earl Guenin, 92, of LaFontaine, IN, and having family members in Warren, IN, died at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at 11:30 p.m.

Mr. Guenin graduated from LaFontaine High School in 1936 and served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for 19 years at Martin Elevator and 11 years at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Marion. He was a member of the LaFontaine Christian Church and the LaFontaine Masonic Lodge.

William W. 'Bill' Williams

William W. "Bill" Williams, 85, of Bluffton, IN, and a native of Warren, IN, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Williams was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during World War II and the Korean War, and later played semi-professional softball. He operated the Texaco station in Warren for many years and was most recently employed by Waynedale Auto Parts. He served on the Warren Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a former assistant chief. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Warren.

Bracken ... established out of necessity ... faded into obscurity

Taken from a 1910 edition of "The Morning Times," not many other statements explain the rise - and fall - of Bracken, now a "ghost town" of Huntington County.

Tucked away in the northwest corner of the county along Ind.-105, Bracken was a typical agricultural community upon which Warren Township residents relied for essential supplies and services before the age of the automobile and modern highway design.
