Homestead stops HNHS girl golfers

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity golf team couldn't keep its scores low enough as only Liz Conley scored lower than most visiting Homestead players in a 171-198 defeat of the Lady Vikings at LaFontaine Golf Course on Monday, Aug. 23.

Conley led Huntington North with a 43, but two Lady Spartans, Brianna Blumenhurst and Emily Olsen, shot 42s. Other Homestead scores were 43, 44, and 50.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Lady Vikings couldn't shoot lower than a 51. Maddie Meese and Morgan O'Banion each had the 51s, Shawna Titus shot a 53 and Laurisa Richard hit a 62.

HNHS soccer girls score 3 but only get draw

Although the Huntington North High School girls' soccer team managed three goals against visiting Norwell on Monday, Aug. 23, the Lady Vikings couldn't add a fourth score and left the field in a 3-3 draw.

Kelsey Hollowell took center stage for Huntington, scoring two goals. Allison Johnson added the third. Assists were recorded by Shelby Bradford and Lauren Bradbury.

Kaylie Dunn beefed up the defense with 15 saves.

Monday's match brought the Lady Vikes to a 2-1-1 record.

 

Wemhoff nets winner in second half as HNHS soccer boys triumph

Tyler Wemhoff scored the winning goal in the second half to take the Huntington North High School boys' varsity soccer team to a 1-0 victory over host Norwell on Monday, Aug. 23.

Isaac Wust had the assist on the goal.

Goalkeeper Kyle Williams had three saves. Now 2-1, the Vikings outshot Norwell 22-11.

In junior varsity action, the Vikings shut down Norwell 3-0.

Ethan Gordon, Tyler Henline and Josh Edwards all had goals, with Edwards and Henline each having an assist.

 

William W. Dilts

William W. Dilts, 98, of Warren, IN, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Heritage Pointe in Warren.

Mr. Dilts worked at Farnsworth Electronics in Marion. He retired from I.T.T. in Fort Wayne and was a Huntington County farmer.

He was born March 2, 1912, in Fairmount to Frank and Lovita Naomi Lemon Dilts. He married Jewel G. Adams on Jan. 16, 1949 in Gas City. She preceded him in death on June 28, 2009.

Johanna Swain

Johanna Swain, 103, of Lytton Springs, TX, and a former resident of Huntington County, IN, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at her home.

Mrs. Swain, a native of Holland, came to the United States on Sept. 29, 1913, and became a United States citizen on Aug. 12, 1927. She lived many years in South Dakota, where she taught school. She lived in Andrews and Huntington from 1958 to 1996, when she moved to Lytton Springs, TX. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lockhart, TX.

Marie L. Rutenberg

Marie L. Rutenberg, 99, of Markle, IN, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at 7:10 p.m. at the Markle Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She had lived at the center since 1998, moving there from Gardner Court in Markle.

She was a 1930 graduate of Ossian High School and attended International Business College, Fort Wayne. She was employed as a ledger clerk for Indiana-Michigan Electric Company in Fort Wayne for 28 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Joan R. Kloer

Joan R. Kloer, 72, of Andrews, IN, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at The Heritage of Huntington.

Mrs. Kloer was a 1955 graduate of Elmhurst High School, Fort Wayne. She was the owner of the Kloer Villa Herb Shop in Andrews and was a member of the Calvary Chapel Assembly of God Church in Wabash.

She was born Oct. 27, 1937, in Fort Wayne to Carl E. and Mary Garneta Diss Altman. She married Paul F. Kloer on April 21, 1956, at Trinity English Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne.

James W. McDougall

James W. McDougall, 70, of Decatur, IN, and having family members in Huntington, IN, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at 9:45 a.m. at his home.

Mr. McDougall was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, and a member of United Auto Workers Local 402. He retired from Navistar after working for 45 years in quality control. He owned Windswept Arabians and Log Home Specialists.

He was born March 31, 1940, in Fort Wayne to Charles and Dorothy Hunt McDougall. He married Carol Jacquay on April 10, 1960, in Ossian. His wife survives.

Janet Holmes

Janet Holmes, 84, of Warren, IN, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at 9:55 a.m. at Heritage Pointe in Warren.

Mrs. Holmes was a registered nurse, working at the United Methodist Memorial Home (now Heritage Pointe) in Warren for 18 years. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1943 and Lutheran Nursing School in 1946. She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Warren, and made several missions trips to Honduras through the church, serving in the Doctors Without Borders program.
