Eight former students earn Horace Mann awards

Horace Mann Elementary School recently awarded scholarships to eight former students.

Kaitlyn Smart, Caleb Duckett, Kelsey Bartrom, Rachel Wallace, Heidi Nissley, Lisa Daronatsy, Matthew Cherry and Seth Brunner were all named recipients of the scholarships.

Smart plans to attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for her second year. She is enrolled in the Indiana University School of Nursing. Smart is the daughter of David and Lisa Smart.

Kirchner gets leading role in Fort Wayne production

Roanoke Clerk-Treasurer JoAnne Kirchner was recently awarded a lead role in "The Ladies in Cabin 10," the winning play of the 1st Northeast Indiana Playwrite Festival sponsored by the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre.

The play continues its run at the Allen County Public Library Auditorium this coming weekend, June 11-13.

"This play...has been one of the best experiences of my life," Kirchner says. "Being able to be a part of the original play coming to life in front of the playwrite has been an amazing journey."

Local Republicans will search for new chairman

The Huntington County Republican Party is looking for a new chairman.

Kris Underwood, local party chairman for the past year and a half, resigned from that post effective June 4 because of a move outside Huntington County.

"Although the move may be temporary until fall, there is a chance that we may not move back to Huntington County," Underwood wrote in a letter of resignation dated May 27.

The party will hold a caucus on Thursday, June 17, 2010, to select a new chairman.

Friends of Library Used Book Sale runs June 9 through June 12

The Friends of the Library's annual Used Book Sale starts Wednesday, June 9, and continues through Saturday, June 12, at the Huntington City-Township Public Library, located at 255 W. Park Drive.

The Friends of the Library will accept donations of gently used books and other items for the sale through Monday, June 7.

The sale preview is Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is for Friends of the Library members only, but new members may join at the door. Memberships entitle the member to receive two free books at the sale.

Construction on CR 300W will close road — and landfill — on June 10

A construction project on CR 300W in Huntington County, which was originally scheduled for June 3, was postponed until Thursday, June 10, because of heavy rains that were expected last week.

County Road 300W, between Etna Road and CR 300S, will be closed to all through traffic on Thursday, June 10, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The road will reopen at approximately 3 p.m. the same day.

The Huntington Landfill, which is located on CR 300W, will also be closed because work on the road will make the landfill inaccessible.

Bailey wins state police essay contest

Julia Bailey, a fifth-grade student at Flint Springs Elementary School, was the Huntington County winner for the "David Deuter Memorial 5th Grade Essay Contest" sponsored by the Indiana State Police.

Students were asked to write on the topic, "What Being a Good Citizen Means to Me," in honor of Master Trooper Davis Deuter, who was killed on the Indiana Toll Road by a semi in 1998 while on a traffic stop.

A state winner, runner-up and third place winner will be selected from the county winners. All winners receive at least a $100 U.S. savings bond.

 

Huntington, Markle libraries start reading programs

The Huntington City-Township Public Library and the Markle branch will kick off their summer reading program on June 7, which will continue through July 24. The theme this year is Make a Splash - Read! for children from birth to sixth grade, and Make Waves at Your Library for the young adults.

The program is designed to encourage reading and motivate families to broaden their reading experiences in a fun way. Each age group has its own format and requirements.

Optimist Club presents May youth awards

The Optimist Club of Huntington recently awarded its Youth Appreciation Awards for May to three Huntington North High School students.

David Ballard, Heidi Blocker and Jessica Musselman were the recipients of the award.

Ballard participated in tennis, in which he earned All Conference, Team Captain Sectional Champion and Academic All-Conference honors; basketball, as a Scholar Athlete; DECA Marketing Competition, state and international qualifier; National Honor Society; Class Council, senior and junior class president; and Junior Rotarian.

Chadwick, Scheiber earn Daughtery scholarship

The Huntington County Community Foundation has announced that Richard Chadwick and Corey Scheiber have been awarded Daugherty Family Scholarships.

Chadwick, a graduating senior at Huntington North High School, will be attending Ball State University to major in sport administration.

While at Huntington North, he was on the football team and Unity Council, and he also earned an academic letter. Chadwick was a member of the National Honor Society and DECA.

He is the son of Richard Chadwick, San Antonio, TX, and Tine Smith, Warren.

Allred awarded Uecker scholarship

The Huntington County Community Foundation has announced that Taylor Allred has been awarded the Thomas J. Uecker Memorial Scholarship to attend Purdue University.

Allred, the Class of 2010 valedictorian, will major in chemical engineering. While at Huntington North, he was a member of the National Honor Society, Huntington North Scholar Athlete, District All-Academic Team and was a Northeast Indiana American Chemistry Society Chemistry Bowl Champion.
