Jay M. Fox

Jay Marion Fox, 84, of Markle, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at 3 a.m. at his home.

Mr. Fox was the owner and operator of Fox Construction Inc. for 31 years, retiring in 1985, and was a member of the board of directors of Indiana Constructors Inc. from 1973 to 1976. He served on the Markle Town Council from 1995 to 2002 and was the council’s president for part of that time. He graduated from Markle High School in 1942 and was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a 60-year member of American Legion Post 160 in Roanoke, where he held a life membership. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689 in Huntington.

He was a 50-year member of Markle Masonic Lodge 453, a 54-year member of Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne and a member of Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne. He was a life member of the Huntington Moose Lodge.

He was born June 19, 1924, in Markle to Russell and Lesta Hite Fox. He married Betty Finley on July 11, 1951, in Goodland; she preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 1973. He married Emma Jean Sutton Goeglein on Jan. 31, 1976, in Garrett; she survives.

Additional survivors include three daughters, Janet (Curt) Robinson, of Indianapolis; Joyce (Bob) Gowdy, of Charlotte, NC; and Connie (Larry) Conner, of Fort Wayne; two sons, Nile Goeglein, of Albany, and Alan Goeglein, of Fort Wayne; two sisters, Doris Leimenstoll, of Uniondale, and Helen Washburn, of Foristell, MO; a brother, Robert Fox, of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service was  Thursday, June 11, 2009, at the Markle United Methodist Church, Markle. Rev. Kathie Jones officiated. Burial was in the Markle Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by members of Huntington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689.
