Marjorie D. Riggs, 89, of Montpelier, IN, and having ties to Van Buren, IN, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Indiana University Health-Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.

Mrs. Riggs graduated from Bluffton High School in 1941 and attended Ball State Teachers College, Muncie. She retired in 1983 from Corning Glass, Bluffton, where she had worked as a computer operator. She previously worked at RCA. She served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 as an aviation machinist's mate.

She was a member of the Thursday Bridge Club, Montpelier Kiwanis, Business and Professional Women of Bluffton, First United Methodist Church of Montpelier, Psi Iota Xi Sorority in Montpelier, Millard-Brown American Legion Post 156 in Montpelier, Blackford County AARP, the Montpelier Historical Society and Montpelier Senior Citizens. She had served on the board of the Area 6 Council on Aging, was a former president of the Blackford County Democrat Women's Club, was the Blackford County coordinator for Sen. Birch Bayh, was a 12-year member of the Montpelier City Council and served on the board of the Blackford County Mental Health Association.

She was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Wells County to Frank and Minnie B. Betts Phillips. She married Paul LaVere Riggs Jr. on Feb. 14, 1948, in Van Buren. Her husband preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1990.

Survivors include a son, Bill (Linda) Riggs, of Greenfield; two grandchildren, William Eric Riggs and Shellie Renae (Brent) Jordan; and two great-grandchildren.

Calling is Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Walker & Glancy Funeral Home, 109 W. Windsor St., Montpelier. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at 11 a.m., with Rev. David W. Chinn officiating. Interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Montpelier.
