Mark W. Helm

Mark W. Helm, 96, of Sandusky, OH, and formerly of Huntington, IN, died Jan. 5, 2009, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, OH.

Mr. Helm earned a degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 1935 and began his career with the Timken Roller Bearing Company's northern Ohio district. He was employed as chief engineer of the Weber Dental Manufacturing Company, Canton, OH, for 11 years and later spent 20 years as an engineer with The Hoover Company, North Canton, OH. After retirement, he was employed as a solar consultant with Gilbert Heating and Air Conditioning. He held 11 United States patents.

He served with the United States Army in the Cleveland Ordnance District from 1941 through 1945. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sandusky, the Sandusky Yacht Club, the American Legion and several professional organizations.

He was born July 2, 1912, in Huntington to Harry and Jesse Hoover Helm. His first marriage was on May 27, 1938, to Elizabeth J. Moore, who preceded him in death in 2001. His second marriage was on Aug. 24, 2002, to Josephine L. Serraino Silvani, who survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ann (Clyde) Case, of Hendersonville, NC, and Mary Lynne Chavers, of Sterling Heights, MI; a son, David Mark (Justine) Helm, of Lakewood, OH; two stepdaughters, Carol (Anthony) Macleod and Mary Jo (Bruce Popek) Silvani; three grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial Mass was conducted on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky, with Rev. Philip Feltman officiating. Burial was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.
