Sumner B. Sheets, 84, of Huntington County, IN, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at 7 p.m. at his home.
Mr. Sheets graduated from Rock Creek High School in 1945 and served in the United States Navy. He farmed in Huntington County until retiring in 1976.
He participated in hunting and fishing expeditions around the world beginning in 1961 and donated his collection of wildlife specimens to be housed in the Sumner B. Sheets Wildlife Museum. He helped fund the construction of the museum and the museum's maintenance fund. He is the author of "No Turning Back."
He was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Huntington to Lucius and Elva Summers Sheets. He married Alice Ledman on Sept. 17, 1948, and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Knepper, of Roanoke, and Nancy Marroquin, of Aurora, IL; a sister, Cosette Sheets, of Fort Wayne; and a grandson, Nick Custer, Elgin, TX.
He is also survived by a companion, Elaine Beck, of Huntington.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept.29, 2012, at 4 p.m. at the Sheets Wildlife Museum and Learning Center.
