Most Rev. John Michael D'Arcy, 80, of Fort Wayne, IN, died late Sunday morning, Feb. 3, 2013, at his home.
He was the bishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, after having served as bishop from 1985 until his retirement in 2009.
He attended St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA, and was ordained in Boston, MA, on Feb. 2, 1957. He served as associate pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish in Beverly, MA, from 1957 to 1965. After earning a doctorate in spiritual theology from the Angelicum in Rome in 1968, he returned to Massachusetts and was ordained auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston on Feb. 14, 1975. He was appointed regional bishop for the Lowell Region of the Boston archdiocese in 1981. He also served as spiritual director and professor of spiritual theology at St. John's Seminary from 1968 to 1985. He was installed as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend on May 1, 1985.
He was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Brighton, MA, to Michael John and Margaret Moran D'Arcy.
Survivors include two sisters, Sister Anne D'Arcy and Joan (Hugh) Sheridan.
Morning prayer at St. Matthew Cathedral, South Bend, will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at 10 a.m., followed by calling throughout the day. Recitation of the rosary will begin at 5 p.m. and Bishop Kevin Rhoades will celebrate a Mass of Transferral at 7 p.m.
Morning prayer at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Clinton St., Fort Wayne, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at 10 a.m., followed by calling throughout the day. Recitation of the rosary will begin at 5 p.m. and evening prayer at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at noon, with calling from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Cathedral of the immaculate Conception. A reception for all will follow at the Grand Wayne Center, Fort Wayne. The family will hold a private committal service in the crypt of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Seminary Education Fund, Priests' Pension fund, Bishop D'Arcy Catholic Education Fund, any of the four diocesan Catholic high schools, Women's Care Center, Christ Child Society, St. John the Baptist Parish in Fort Wayne or St. Monica Parish in Mishawaka.
