Virgil D. 'Dutch' Thorn

Virgil D. "Dutch" Thorn, 89, of Huntington, IN, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at 12:15 p.m. at his home.
Mr. Thorn was a 1943 graduate of Huntington High School and a member of the school's unbeaten 1940 football team. He had worked at Dana Corporation for 45 years. He was a member of Central Christian Church, American Legion Post 85, Huntington Elks Lodge and Huntington YMCA swim team. He served as president of the Athletic Board at Dana for several years.
He was born Feb. 1, 1924, in Huntington to Bert and Pearl Armfield Thorn. He married M. Louise Haverman on April 19, 1944, in Huntington. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Pete (Marilyn) Thorn, of Challis, ID, and Sam (Ruby) Thorn, of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Peg Smallwood, of Huntington; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Calling is Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery.
