Evelyn Shafer, 93, of Huntington, IN, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at 1:45 p.m. at her home.
Mrs. Shafer, a lifelong Huntington County resident, graduated from Huntington Township High School. She worked on the family farm in Polk Township and had also worked at Wolf & Dessauer and L.S. Ayres, Fort Wayne. She was a lay minister of the United Methodist Church for 25 years and was a member of Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was born March 22, 1920, in Huntington to Chester and Jenny Smith Shell. She married Philip J. Shafer on Sept. 3, 1939, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 2007.
Survivors include a son, Philip K. (Jenny) Shafer, of Huntington; three daughters, Bonnie (Gary) Groves, of Tunkhannock, PA; Connie Long, of Huntington; and Sonnie (Robert) Laviolette, of Zionsville; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Calling is Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Drive, Huntington. A service will be held on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service, at Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church, 3029S-600W, Huntington. Dr. Veryl Roth and Russell Buzzard will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Etna Cemetery, Huntington County.
Memorial gifts may be made to Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church or HAT (Huntington Area Transportation) in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary.
