Frederick A. "Fritz" Eckert, 79, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at 11:02 p.m. at Parkview Regional Medical Center, in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Eckert graduated from Huntington Catholic High School in 1952 and served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957. He worked as a pipefitter and steamfitter for Shambaugh & Son, Fort Wayne. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689, American Legion Post 7, Knights of Columbus Council 1014 and Moose Lodge 837, all in Huntington. He was also a member of Steamfitters/Pipefitters Local 166.
He was born Feb. 25, 1934, in Huntington to Raymond and Emma Jane McVoy Eckert. He married June M. Stoffel on May 7, 1959, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Huntington. His wife preceded him in death on Sept. 13, 1983.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Eckert, of Huntington, and Paul Eckert, of Owenton, KY; four daughters, Brenda (Tom) Shaw, Linda Sellers, Donna Eckert and Theresa (Mark) Kitt, all of Huntington; five brothers, Tom (Winnie) Eckert, David P. (Mary Catherine) Eckert, Kenneth (Cheri) Eckert and Raymond Eckert Jr., all of Huntington, and Charles "Chas" (Judy) Eckert, Palestine, IL; four sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Kindler, Mary Jane (Don) Bartrom, Marilyn (Buddy) Hayes and Diane (Jim) Carl, all of Huntington; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Calling is Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m., at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to Mass. Rev. Ron Rieder will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.
