Eva Lucille Kelsey Schenkel, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at 9:20 a.m. at Tipton House, in Huntington, IN.
Mrs. Schenkel graduated from Rock Creek High School in 1941. She was honored by the Huntington County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees for more than 20 years of dedicated service tutoring children at Central Elementary school in the Title 1 Program. The Huntington Optimist Club presented her the Youth Appreciation Award in 1999. She was also a Cub Scout den mother. After retiring from the school tutoring program she served as a volunteer at Parkview Huntington Hospital for several years. She was a long time member of St. Peter's First Community Church, where she was very active in several church programs over the years, including the church choir.
She was born May 17, 1923, in Markle to Clem A. Kelsey and Ida A. Smith. She married James Davis Schenkel on Aug. 6, 1949, in Huntington. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Kay) Schenkel, of Urbana, OH; a daughter, Lisa (Scott) Harter, of Huntington; and three grandsons, Andy Schenkel, Alex Schenkel and Matthew Harter.
Calling is Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Peter's First Community Church, 206 Etna Ave., Huntington, with a service to follow at noon. Rev. Richard Strick will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's First Community Church Cemetery.
