Charles L. 'Mike' Melton

Charles L. "Mike" Melton, 86, of Arcadia, FL, and a former Van Buren, IN, businessman, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at DeSota Memorial Hospital in Arcadia.

Mr. Melton worked as a bulk gas truck manager for Farm Bureau Retail Gas, retiring in 1984 after 25 years of service. He had also owned and operated the Marathon gas station in Van Buren. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Arcadia, FL., and a member of the church's Methodist men's group. He was a 50-year member of Van Buren Masonic Lodge 711 and a member of Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1939 to 1945.

He was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Kansas, IL, to John and Luce Gorden Melton. He married Esther L. Cox on Jan. 1, 1944, and she survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Jams (Nora) Melton, of Rochester; two sisters, Clarabell Young, of Paris, IL, and Mary McHenry, of Marion; and four grandsons, Andy, Scott and Kile Melton, of Rochester, and Bart Melton, of Washington, DC.

Calling is Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ferguson & Glancy Funeral Home, 201 W. Main St., Van Buren. A service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at 10 a.m. Dr. Tom Mansbarger will officiate, assisted by Rev. Mel Hall. Interment will be at the Van Buren Cemetery.
