W. Winston Becker

W. Winston Becker, 88, of Indianapolis, IN, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Mr. Becker served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Huntington College and a Master of Science and Doctor of Education from Indiana University. He taught English, speech and mathematics in Illinois and Indiana and served as assistant principal and then principal of Morton High School, in Hammond, for 23 years. He retired in 1988 as a principal in Milford.

He served as an elder and deacon in Presbyterian churches in Hammond and Warsaw. After moving to Indianapolis, he was an elder and deacon at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

He was born May 9, 1925, in Stevensville, Ontario, Canada, to Elmer and Inez Schad Becker. He married Maxine Ackerman Becker on June 18, 1949, and she preceded him in death on July 17, 2008.

Survivors include a son, Alan (Robin) Becker; a daughter, Diane (Paul) Bird; three sisters, Betty Favorite, Ruth Weber and Carol (Jim) Nolan; a brother, Rev. E. Carlson (Naomi) Becker; and six grandchildren, Stuart Wirtes, Mitchell Wirtes, Brandon Bird, Sarah Becker, Benjamin Becker and Jonathan Becker.

Calling is Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Broad Ripple, 1305 E. Broad Ripple Ave., Indianapolis. A service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Blvd. E. Drive, Indianapolis.
