Bernard George "Bernie" Reust, 87, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at the University of Arizona Medical Center/Kino Hospital, in Tucson, AZ.
Mr. Reust left school to serve in the United States Army and received the Bronze Star while serving in the Battle of the Bulge under Gen. George S. Patton during World War II. He was wounded in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Post 160, in Roanoke, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He owned and operated Schmidt Electric, Inc., in Fort Wayne. He was a 62-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 305 and was past president of the National Electrical Contractors Association.
Mr. Reust was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Huntington, and had served on the church's Parish Council. He was a former member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, Nix Settlement. He was also a member of the Rincon Wood Carvers.
He was born April 17, 1926, in Huntington to Henry and Catherine Reust. He married Ardella Ness on May 30, 1950, at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Nix Settlement. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include four sons, Anthony (Karen) Reust and Andrew (Staci) Reust, both of Columbia City; Gerard (Teresa) Reust, of Lagro; and Ben (Tami) Reust, of Roanoke; two daughters, Mary Meerz, of Fort Wayne, and Sharon (Ken) Deetz, of Huntington; five brothers, Tom (Peg) Reust, of California; Harold (Ellie) Reust, of Yoder; and Mark (Phyllis) Reust, Lee (Marilyn) Reust and Dave (Mary) Reust, all of Huntington; a sister, Kate Purdy, of Fort Wayne;19 grandchildren, Brad Reust, Blake Reust, Stacey Gettys, Noah Gettys, Ryan Gettys, Brett Gettys, Jeff Zickgraf, Rene (Kate) Zickgraf, Brenten Reust, Richard Reust, Lindell Reust, Megan Reust, Adam Reust, Eric Reust, Ian Deetz, Kyle Deetz, Nathan Deetz, Dustin Reust and Damian Reust; and a great-granddaughter.
Calling is Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., with recitation of the rosary at 1:30 p.m., at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 840 Cherry St., Huntington. Rev. Ron Rieder will officiate. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
