Richard E. Michael, 84, of rural Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at 8:15 p.m. at his home.
Mr. Michael spent his formative years in Whitley County. He graduated from Larwill High School and attended barber school in Indianapolis. A barber for 50 years, he owned and operated Village Barber Shop in Fort Wayne for many years. He attended Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church and was a member of Due Guard Lodge 278 Free & Accepted Masons.
He and his wife made their home in South Whitley, Tri Lakes and Fort Wayne before moving to their home north of Huntington in 2010.
He was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Harrisburg, PA, to Steve and Edna Smith Michael. He married Sarah J. Reece on Aug. 9, 1953, and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Thomas (Judi) Michael, of Amarillo TX; William Michael, of Fort Wayne; and James Michael, of Huntington; a sister, Mollie Payne, of Columbia City; two brothers, Thomas Michael, of Philadelphia, PA, and Joseph Michael, of Chicago IL; five grandchildren, Lori Washburn, Cynthia Marie Shepherd, Richard J. Michael, Zachary T. Michael and Lauren D. Michael; and a great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 13, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, 880E-110N, Roanoke.
Preferred memorials are to Visiting Nurse & Hospice or Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are being completed by Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
