Mary Ellen Spencer, 89, of Upland, IN, and having family members in Warren, IN, died Thursday morning, March 27, 2014, at her home.
Mrs. Spencer graduated from Jefferson Township High School, Grant County, in 1942. She retired from Taylor University Food Service, where she had worked for more than 20 years, and volunteered in the Marion General Hospital gift shop.
She had been a member of Upland Eastern Star Chapter 411 for more than 50 years. She had also been a member of the New Mulberry Home Economics Club, Marion General Hospital Auxiliary and the Timeless Treasures Red Hatters Club. She attended the Upland Community Church.
She was born June 5, 1924, in Jefferson Township, Grant County, to Walter and Mabel Pugh Jones. She married Warren F. Spencer on April 17, 1943, at her parents' home in Jefferson Township, Grant County. Her husband preceded her in death on April 4, 2004.
Survivors include two sons, Ed (Nancy) Spencer, of Marion, and David Spencer, of Knoxville, TN; three daughters, Sue Ellen (Robert) Bauer, of Warren; Pam (Bill) Butler, of Fishers; and Vicki (Mark Jones) Shafer, of Upland; a brother-in-law, Dale Spencer; two sisters-in-law, Helen L. Jones, of Upland, and Miriam Jones, of Marion; 13 grandchildren, Kathy (Michael) Collins, Vicki (Marty) Sieberns, Michael Bauer, David (Anne) Bauer, Ann (Brian) Rogers, Max Spencer, Amy (Vince) Norkus, Abby (Chad) Taylor, Allison (Ryan) Powell, Danielle (Jimmy) Summey, Dustin Spencer, Kyle Shafer and Kayla Shafer; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held on Monday, March 31, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Jones-Smith Funeral Home, 259 N. Main St., Upland, with Rev. William Kinnan officiating. Calling is Sunday, March 30, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Jefferson Cemetery, in Upland.
