Mary Knight Leffers, 96, of Fort Wayne, IN, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at St. Anne Home, Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Leffers graduated from Huntington High School in 1935 and graduated from the St. Joseph School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1940. She was employed at Huntington Hospital, served as a community nurse and was director of nursing at Miller's Merry Manor and at Victory Noll, both in Huntington. She retired in 1983.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, in Huntington, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Mary's Rosary Sodality and Secular Franciscans. She was a member of the Art Guild of Huntington and a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
She was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Huntington to E. Edwin and Mary Kathryn Duffey Coughlin. Her first marriage was to Gordon Knight, who preceded her in death on July 3, 1961. She married Paul Leffers on Feb. 17, 1962, and he survives at St. Anne Home.
Additional survivors include three sons, Mark (Virginia) Leffers, of Port Angeles, WA; Jeffrey (Jane Gerardot) Leffers, of Fort Wayne; and Patrick "Eddie" (Kym) Leffers, of Albion; three daughters, Susan (Jack) Solloway and Nancy (Ted) Poulson, both of Huntington, and Sally (Tim) Ford, of Warren; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Calling is Monday, July 14, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m., at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, with Rev. John Overmyer officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
