Rebecca "Becky" Land Custer, 94, of North Manchester, IN, and a former resident of Huntington, IN, died Saturday, July 26, 2014, at 7 a.m. at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.
Mrs. Custer graduated from Roanoke High School in 1938 and had lived in Huntington for 50 years. She worked as a nurse's aide in Maryland and Indiana before attending beauty college. She was owner and operator of Becky's Beauty Booth in the 1960s and 1970s and had also worked in several coil factories in Indiana. She was a member of the Huntington Church of the Bethren.
She was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Fort Wayne to Oliver Paul and Martha Mason Land. She married Hugh Custer on April 29, 1944, in Huntington, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1994.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Custer, of Tucson, AZ, and Sam (Alice) Custer, of Huntington; two daughters, Janet Mason, of Eugene, OR, and Ellen (Robert) Ragan, of North Manchester; a brother, Bill (Wilma) Land, of Huntington; a sister, Opal Nelson, of Cottage Grove, OR; a sister-in-law, Anna Belle Land; 13 grandchildren, Andrellia Lloyd-Burchett, AnJanette Burchett and Alexia Birchler, all of Eugene, OR; Nick Custer, of Elgin, TX; Quentin Custer, Gerald Thomas Jr. and Jeff Sills, all of Huntington; Chris Thomas, of Fort Wayne; Andre Thomas, of St Louis, MO; Jonathan Ragan and Michael Ragan, both of North Manchester; and Allen Custer and Adam Custer, both of Tucson, AZ; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Huntington Church of the Brethren. Burial will be at Maple Grove Friends Cemetery, Huntington.
