John R. Sunderman

John R. Sunderman, 80, of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at 11:25 p.m. at his home.

Mr. Sunderman was the former owner of Insurance Services, in Huntington, retiring in 2009 after 48 years in the insurance business. He graduated in 1951 from Lancaster High School and was a member of the Huntington County Basketball Hall of Fame. He also attended the School of Insurance, at Purdue University.

Mr. Sunderman had served as chairman of the American Red Cross, as president of the Kiwanis Club and the YMCA board and as a member of the 4-H Fair Board. He also served as vice president of the Lime City Economic Development Corporation, as a member of the Economic Development Commission of Huntington County and as president of the Huntington County Independent Insurance Agents. He was a member of The Chapel, in Allen County.

He was born Nov. 23, 1933, in Lancaster Township, Huntington County, to Fred J. and Marie Shideler Sunderman. He married Marilyn Jean Brooking on Sept. 9, 1956, in Huntington. His wife survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Ann M. (Mike) Bonifas and Sara E. Sunderman, both of Fort Wayne; a brother, Donald F. (Eleanor) Sunderman, of Huntington; two sisters, Dianne (David) Parrett, of Huntington, and Patricia M. (John) Weeks, of Fishers; and a grandson, Evan Bonifas, of Fort Wayne.

Calling is Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 W. Park Drive, Huntington. A service will be held at the mortuary on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service. Rev. Rick Hawks will officiate. Burial will be at Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington County.
