Helen J. Byrd

Helen Jane Maples Byrd, 94, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at 3:50 a.m. at The Heritage of Huntington.

Mrs. Byrd graduated from Huntington High School in 1937. She retired in 1974 from Memcor, where she worked as a secretary. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Huntington, and the Rosary Sodality.

She was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Huntington to Clarence R. and Lucile V. Walter Showalter. She married Johnny Maples on Nov. 22, 1941, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 1959. She married Nyle D. Byrd in August of 1968, and he preceded her in death in April of 1987.

Survivors include a son, John (Mary) Maples, of Indianapolis; a son-in-law, Patrick Mettler, of Indianapolis; a sister-in-law, Ethel Maples, of Huntington; a brother-in-law, Jim Stoffel, of Florida; six grandchildren, John (Lyn) Mettler, Emily (Arron) Stephans, Bill (Leah) Maples, Johnny (Doris) Maples, Tom (Katie) Maples and Joe (Shannon Neisus) Maples; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to Mass, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 860 Cherry St., Huntington. Rev. Glenn O'Connor will preside. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Huntington.
