Doris Kunkel, 89, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, at The Heritage of Huntington.
Mrs. Kunkel worked as a nurse in the office of Dr. Robert Furtado, of Fort Wayne, retiring in 1985. She had also worked in the office of Dr. Alfred M. Kierle, in Cincinnati, OH, for 17 years. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1945 and from the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis. She was a student member of the Army Nurse Corps.
She was a member of the Indiana Sorosis Chapter and Chi Chapter of Tri Kappa. She was a past treasurer and life member of American Legion Post 7 Auxiliary, in Huntington, and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, in Huntington, where she was active with the Women's Association and choir. She was the first director of the Pink Ladies volunteers at the Huntington County Hospital.
She served on the YMCA board of directors in the 1940s and 1950s and had taught swimming and synchronized swimming at the YMCA. She had also been a member of the Aquatunes synchronized swimming team and the YMCA girls' swim team. She had been a member of the first Brownie and Girl Scout troops in Huntington and was in the original group of Job's Daughters Bethel of Huntington.
She was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Huntington to Fred and Helen Bendel Dick. She had been married to George W. Frye. Her second marriage was to David M. Kunkel on Dec. 17, 1967, and he preceded her in death on July 2, 2004.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna D. (Brian) Schindler, of Fort Wayne; a son, James D. (Vicky Gordon) Frye, of Huntington; a stepdaughter, Mary Carolyn Walker, of Holland, MI; a stepson, John Kunkel; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Calling is Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. A service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. Entombment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Huntington.
