Evelyn A. Shafter

Evelyn Alice Shafter, 92, of Warren, IN, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, at 1:40 a.m. at Heritage Pointe, in Warren.

Mrs. Shafter was a 1940 graduate of Lincolnville High School, in Lincolnville, and attended Wayne University Cosmetology School. She was a licensed beautician and, with her husband owned and operated Shafter’s Marine at Tri Lakes. She had also worked at Fabric Center as a sales clerk, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home as a greeter and at Heritage Pointe as a beautician.

She was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 50 years. She held offices on the local, district and conference levels of the United Methodist Women and the United Methodist Church. She also served on election boards and nominating committees and attended eight National Assemblies.

She was born June 19, 1922, in Ellingson, SD, to Celia M. and Beatrice I. Gooding Smith. She married Richard L. Shafter on June 28, 1946, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, David L. (Sandra) Shafter, of Fort Wayne, and Richard P. (Bobbie) Shafter, of Tri Lakes; four brothers, Gordon Smith, of Warren; Dr. C. Curtis (Dee) Smith, of Fort Wayne; Paul Smith, of Michigan; and Edgar P. (Debora) Smith, of Lagro; four sisters, Ida May Grossman, and Celia Shankster, both of North Manchester; Rosemary (Melvin) Royer, of Florida; and Dr. Harriet (Dr. Jon) Askew, of Arizona; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Calling is Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, from 10 a.m. to noon at Heritage Pointe, 801 Huntington Ave., Warren. A service will be held on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to the service, at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Burial will be at Blue River Cemetery.
