Dr. Herbert W. Lohmuller

Herbert Wendel Lohmuller, M.D., 91, of Bluffton, and having ties to Huntington, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 5:06 a.m. at River Terrace Retirement Community, in Bluffton.

Dr. Lohmuller spent the last 20 years of his practice at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic and Hospital, in Bluffton, as a hematologist and oncologist.

After graduating from North East Catholic High School, in Philadelphia, PA, in 1943, he was drafted into the United States Army and earned a medical degree from Ohio State Medical School in 1949. He was drafted again in 1954, serving as a captain and company commander at Fort Hood, in Killeen, TX, and later at the Arizona Navajo Ordnance Depot, near Flagstaff, AZ. He was discharged in 1956 and continued his private practice in Philadelphia, joining the Caylor-Nickel Clinic, in Bluffton, in 1968.

In Bluffton, he served as president of the Wells County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and began a free clinic to serve migrant farm workers. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Indiana Tumor Registry. After retiring from medical practice in 1989, he volunteered at the Wells County Public Library.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Bluffton, where he was a choir member, cantor and religious education teacher, worked in the ministry serving migrant workers and was leader of the St. Joseph Chapter of the St.Vincent de Paul Society.
He was born May 29, 1924, in Philadelphia, PA, to Martin Nicholas and Mary Frances Doser Lohmuller. He married Nora Genevieve Lavins on Aug. 12, 1950, and she survives.

Additional survivors include five sons, Bernard (Karen) Lohmuller, of Fort Wayne; Martin (Jean) Lohmuller, of Granger; John Lohmuller, of Bluffton; Paul Lohmuller, of St. Louis, MO; and Joseph (Ann) Lohmuller, of Bettendorf, IA; five daughters, Mary (John) Koors, of Racine, WI; Theresa (Larry) Sell, of Bluffton; Margaret (James) Pfister, a former long-time Huntington resident now living in Fort Wayne; Catherine (James) Cicchiello, of Fort Wayne; and Elizabeth (Ron) Grisoli, of Granger; a brother, Most.Rev. Martin Lohmuller; 29 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Monday, June 1, at 10 a.m., with calling one hour prior to Mass, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Bluffton. Rev. Pius N. Ilechukwu will be the celebrant. Burial will be at Elm Grove Cemetery, in Bluffton.
