Ruth L. Harris

Ruth L. Harris, 98, of Huntington, IN, died Friday, June 5, 2015, at 4:15 p.m. at her home.

Mrs. Harris was a 1935 graduate of Washington Center High School and received her B.S. in education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She earned a master’s in education from Ball State University. She retired in 1977 after 29 years as an elementary teacher with the Huntington Community School Corporation. During her career, she also taught in Whitley County and Franklin.

Mrs. Harris held memberships in both the Retired Teachers Association of Indiana and the Retired Teachers Association of Huntington County. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Huntington for more than 70 years, where she also served as a deaconess. She was a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, where she served as president and membership chairman. She was also a member of Ladies’ Night Club of Huntington.

She was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Piper City, IL, to William and Effie Rebholz Lawrence. She married Max Harris on Jan. 28, 1945 in Peru, Indiana, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 2010.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Max (Bev) Harris, of Huntington; two daughters, Kay Lorraine Harris, of Cochise, AZ. and Dianne (Mark) McElhaney, of Benson, AZ; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation or funeral services. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
