Verlin L. Kehmeyer, 94, a former resident of Huntington IN, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at 10:05 a.m. at The Laurels of Defiance in Defiance, OH, where he had lived since October 2009.
Mr. Kehmeyer had previously lived at the Tipton House in Huntington, from 2007 to 2009, and was a former resident of South Whitley. He graduated from Washington Center High School and served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, during World War II. He was employed by Kuhner Packing Co., Fort Wayne, for six years, and retired in October 1977 from Transport Service, Columbia City, with 34 years of service. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2919.
He was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Whitley County to Fred and Clara Briggeman Kehmeyer. He married Loretta M. Jenkins on April 1, 1939. His wife preceded him in death on May 30, 2001.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia (Adrian) Kuhlman, of Defiance, OH; a half-sister, Bernice Abbett, of Roanoke; three grandsons, Tim Kuhlman, of Corpus Christi, TX; Dennis Kuhlman, of Defiance, OH; and Chad Kuhlman, of Dublin, OH; and six great-grandsons.
Calling is Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, 208 N. Maple St., South Whitley. A service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the South Whitley Cemetery, with military honors presented by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.
Preferred memorials are gifts to Community Health Professionals of Defiance or St. John's Lutheran Church.
