Barbara S. Elsten

Barbara Sue Brooks Elsten, 69, of Kokomo, IN, and a native of Huntington, IN, died early Saturday morning, Aug. 27, 2016, at Northwoods Village, in Kokomo.

Mrs. Elsten served as a pastor’s wife with her first husband, Rev. Tony Brooks, for more than 37 years and attended Syracuse Baptist Church, in Syracuse. She had also worked as a librarian for the Tipton Library and at Our Sunday Visitor.

She was born Sept. 28, 1946, in Huntington to Joe and Pauline Schenkel Derr. She married Tony A. Brooks on June 17, 1969, and he preceded her in death on Dec 8, 2006. She married Thomas J. Elsten on Sept. 8, 2012, in Huntington, and he survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Marcus A. Brooks, of Kokomo; a daughter, Amy P. Brooks, of Fort Wayne; a sister, Sharon Schlupe, of Fort Wayne; a brother, Bob Derr, of Fort Wayne; and three grandchildren, Shelby Carpenter, Sierra Carpenter and Cheyenne Brooks.

Calling is Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church, Huntington. A service will be held at the church on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Karen Koelsch officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery, in Huntington. Following committal services at the cemetery, a carry-in dinner and time of fellowship will be held at Pilchers Chapel United Methodist Church.
