Gordon L. Schaefer

Gordon L. Schaefer, 91, of Fort Wayne, IN, and having local ties, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016.

Mr. Schaefer served in the U.S. Army 29th Division, 175th Infantry, during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. After the war he graduated from Ball State University and was a coach and teacher in Lagro for several years. He retired as a United States Postal Service postmaster after 27 years, and volunteered for Lutheran Hospital for several years. He was a drummer with several jazz trios through the 1960s in the Fort Wayne area. Memberships include DAV, American Legion and VFW.

He was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Clinton. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie.

Survivors include a son, Michael D. (Kim) Schaefer; two daughters, Anna (Mark Drabenstot) Schaefer and Laura (Doug) Dillon; six grandchildren, Bart Drabenstot, Tera Dillon, Matthew Dillon, Bree Schaefer, Josh Schaefer and Garrett Kestner; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Saturday Oct. 1, 2016, at 1 p.m. at First United Church of Christ Cemetery, 1700 W. Park Drive, Huntington.

Memorial gifts may be made to Honor Flight of Indiana and the Andrews Public Library-Veterans Memorial.
