Edward 'Gunny' Stangland Jr.

Edward Roy “Gunny” Stangland Jr., 65, of rural Albion, IN, and a former resident of Huntington County, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2016, at 3:08 p.m. at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Stangland grew up in Whitley and Huntington counties. He completed his education at Ivy Tech. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1991 as a gunnery sergeant. He was a General Motors certified master technician and owned and operated Gunny’s Auto Repair from 1997 until 2016. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4717, in Wolf Lake, and American Legion Post 246, in Albion.

He was born Sept. 2, 1951, in Wolf Lake to Edward Roy and Joan Herron Stangland. He married Colene D. Smith on Nov. 1, 2014, and she survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, MiYong (Tim) Grable, of Columbia City; a son, Carl (Brigitte Ridgeway) Stangland, of Auburn; four stepchildren, Faron Smith, of Florida; Jolene Parrish and Jennifer (Doug) Simon, both of Fort Wayne; and Nicholas Nicoski, of Albion; three sisters; a brother; three grandchildren, Brock Grable, Dylan Grable and Henry Stangland; four stepgrandchildren; and the mother of his children, MiJa Stangland, of Columbia City.

Calling is Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, from noon to 2 p.m., with a service following at 2 p.m., at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 207 N. Main St., Columbia City. Burial will be at Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam, with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps.
