George W. Stallings, 89, of Huntington, died Monday, March 15, 2010, at 7:42 a.m. at Heritage Pointe, Warren.
Mr. Stalling graduated from Andrews High School with the class of 1940. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Huntington College and a Master of Arts from Ball State University. He was a teacher and coach in the Fort Wayne Community Schools from 1963 to 1983.
He served as a Marine aviator during World War II and the Korean War, receiving a Distinguished Flying Cross for a major strike over Tokyo.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Indiana Teachers Association.
He was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Plymouth to Clarence and Bertha Williams Stallings. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Wilkinson on Jan. 27, 1944. His wife survives in Huntington.
Additional survivors include a son, Mike Stallings, of Fort Wayne; two daughters, Theresa Diener, of Monticello, and Mary (Shawn) Chambers, of Mt. Joliet; two brothers, Wilbur Stallings, of Andrews, and Les (Bobbie) Stallings, of Baton Rouge, LA; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, March 19, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington, with Rev. John Pfister presiding. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Andrews.
Pallbearers were Ian Stallings, Ben Diener, Andy Chambers, Danny Chambers, Bill Stallings, Russ Stallings, Rod Dickason and David Stallings. Honorary pallbearer was Emely Beerhalter.
Military rites were done by an honor guard consisting of Leslier Ackermann, Mike Hilton, Carl Smith Mike Smith and Ralph Miler. Flag detail was Jerry Helms and Jerry Walling, and Wayne Ashbaugh and Dave Rinehart did the cannon and "Taps."
Preferred memorials are gifts to St. Mary Catholic Church for Masses or to the National Parkinson Association.
