Carl E. Altman

Carl E. Altman, 93, of Huntington, IN, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at 3:17 p.m. at The Heritage of Huntington.

Mr. Altman was the owner of Altman-Kramer Motors Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge Dealership from 1954 to 1983. He had previously been employed by Central Soya, Poinsatte Motors and International Harvester.

He was a 1933 graduate of Roanoke High School and a 1936 graduate of International Business College, Fort Wayne.

Mr. Altman was a 54-year member of Central Christian Church and was a founding director of the Central Christian Church Foundation. He was a member of the Huntington Rotary Club, where he had been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a long-time member of the Three Rivers Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine.

He was an active member of the Travelers Protective Association of America, Fort Wayne Chapter, and a past state president. He submitted the winning slogan for the National Association of the Travelers Protective Association, "Make Safety First and Make It Last," which is still the official national slogan.

He was born March 17, 1915, in Roanoke to George W. and Etta Morrow Altman. He married Mary Garneta Diss on April 12, 1936, in Aboite. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1999.

Survivors include three daughters, Joan (Paul) Kloer, of Andrews; Nancy (Jerin) Juillerat, of Huntington; and Patricia (Thomas) Potts, of Fishers; a sister, Ilo Jane (William) Martin, of Huntington; eight grandchildren, Michael (Lanna) Kloer and Jane (Joel) Daas, both of Huntington; Michelle (David) Glenn, of Baltimore, MD; Jeffrey Kloer, of Columbia City; Jennifer (Bruce) Willard, Christine (Ben) Lewton and Christopher Potts, all of Fishers; and Jonathan (Tania) Juillerat, of Brownsburg; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A service was held on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, Huntington, with Rev. William Rapp presiding. Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery, Fort Wayne.
