Rev. Howard F. Cherry

Rev. Howard F. Cherry, 88, of Huntington, IN, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at 2:50 a.m. at Heritage Pointe of Warren.

Rev. Cherry was a 1945 graduate of Charlotte High School in Charlotte, MI. He was a graduate of Huntington College and Huntington Theological Seminary. He then received his master’s degree from Saint Francis University in Fort Wayne, and later received his doctorate degree at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957.

Rev. Cherry had pastored over the years at College Park United Brethren Church in Huntington from 1964 to 1966, King Street United Brethren Church in Chambersburg, PA, from 1966 to 1968, Hudson United Brethren Church from 1968 to 1969 in Hudson, Hopewell United Brethren Church in Auburn from 1969 to 1979 and Union Church in Huntington County from 1992 to 1996. He was a professor at the Graduate School of Christian Ministries at Huntington College from 1979 to 1992.

He was a realtor for many years with Wilson Realty in Huntington, and he was on the board of directors at the Huntington Senior Center. He was semi-retired from 1996 to present. He also spent time in Jamaica and Honduras training ministers.

He was born March 28, 1929, in Potterville, MI, to Richard and Ruth Snore Cherry. He married Suzanne Walters on Oct. 4, 1952, in Charlotte, MI, and she survives in Warren.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Joanne (Brent) Brenneman, of Fort Wayne; Janice (Jeff) Carter, of Roanoke; two sons, Mark (Marla) Cherry, of Wonder Lake, IL; Lon (Cathy) Cherry, of Franklin, TN; a brother: Harold Cherry, of Huntington; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Calling is held Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at 11 a.m. with calling one hour prior to the service at College Park United Brethren Church, 1945 College Ave., Huntington, with Rev. Gary Dilley and Rev. Paul Hirschy officiating. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Huntington County.
