Thomas A. Daly

Thomas A. Daly, 98, formerly of Huntington, IN, died on April 25, 2010, at Woodhaven Care Center, Murrysville, PA.

A summa cum laude graduate of Purdue University in 1934, Mr. Daly was elected to Eta Kappa Nu, the international honor society for engineers, served as editor of the Purdue Engineer and was a member of the Triangle fraternity. He had a long career as an executive with Westinghouse Electric. He was granted 13 patents in a variety of areas, including the Mark 37 torpedo, power transformers and the submarine Polaris missile launcher. He concluded his career as corporate director of Reliability Engineering and Product Safety.

As founding chairman of the Reliability Division of the American Society for Quality Control, he was a prolific writer, lecturer and keynote speaker. During the World War II his efforts in developing the homing torpedo led to citations from the United States Navy and the Office of Scientific Research and Development for "significant contributions leading to the successful prosecution of the war."

Mr. Daly was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was a longtime supporter of the Covenant House.

He was born Oct. 5, 1911, in Hammond to William C. and Helen Shea Daly. He was married to Ruth Eleanor Hammond for 65 years prior to her passing in 2001.

Surviving are three sons, William (Linnie) Daly, Michael (Linda) Daly and Richard Daly; grandchildren Amber, Alicia, Brian (Amanda), Caitlin, Ryan and Richard (Michele); and five great-grandchildren.

Calling is Friday, April 30, 2010, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 1, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN 46750. Rev. John Pfister will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
