Lawrence D. 'Smitty' Smith

Lawrence D. “Smitty” Smith, 72, of Huntington, IN, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, at 2:11 a.m. at his residence.

Mr. Smith was a 1964 graduate of Milan High School in Milan, MI, and was a 1968 graduate of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, earning his bachelor’s degree in marketing. He worked for 39 years in pharmaceutical sales at the Pfizer Company, retiring in 2008. He had played semi-pro hockey in Indianapolis for two years.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Delta Sigma Phi social fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, professional business fraternity-NMU charter member, American Marketing Association, Sons of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of the Moose, Huntington County Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, Trout Unlimited, Three Rivers Fly Fishers, Federation of Fly Fisherman and was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

He was born Oct. 11, 1946, in Auburn, NY, to John and Marie Skelton Smith. His mother, Marie Pilbeam, survives in Saline, MI. He married Jeanne Yurnikl on Jan. 27, 1968, in Blissfield, MI, and she also survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Amy Wheeler, of Angola; a son, Matthew Smith, of Traverse City, MI; a sister; Joy Holley of Saline, MI; and three grandchildren, Matthew Wheeler, Maria Wheeler and Elizabeth Wheeler.

Calling is Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, at 11 a.m., with one hour of visitation prior to the service, at the St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington with Rev. Stephen Colchin officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Beech Grove Cemetery.
