Dr. Lane Netherland

Dr. Lane Netherland, 77, of Lawton, OK, and with ties to Huntington County, IN, died Friday, March 8, 2019, at his residence after a brief battle with cancer.

Mr. Netherland grew up in Indiana and graduated from Fort Wayne South Side High School in Fort Wayne.  
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Huntington College, and after accepting a fellowship to Oklahoma State University, he and his family moved from Indiana to Stillwater, OK, in 1965. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in agricultural and applied sciences from Oklahoma State University.  After earning his master’s degree, he taught biological sciences in Tonkawa, OK, at Northern Oklahoma College for three years. He returned to Stillwater in 1969 to work on his doctorate and received his degree in 1971. He accepted a teaching position with Cameron University in 1972, teaching for 31 years.  He retired in 2003.

Mr. Netherland was a member of First Baptist Church.  He was also the first president of Phi Kappa Phi at Cameron University.

He was born Jan. 23, 1942, in Louisville, KY, to Edwin Lane and Gladys Netherland. He married Joelene Wisel on Sept. 1, 1959, in Roanoke, and she survives.

He is survived by three daughters, Laurie (Kevin) Lewis, of Hillsboro, TX; Connie (Mike) Hays, of Edmond, OK; and Kathy Netherland, of Lawton, OK; a daughter-in-law, Marci Love Netherland, of Gainesville, FL; nine grandchildren, Megan (Scott) Mansfield, Matthew Lewis, Mikel Lewis, Dan (Rachel) Hays, Nate (Ashley) Hays, Annie (Nils Mueggenburg) Hays, Luke Netherland, Sarah Netherland and Heather (Steve) Patnode; and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was held Saturday, March 23, 2019, in First Baptist Church of Lawton with Rev. Mike Hays of Edmond, OK, and Dr. Patrick Latham officiating.
